In recent times, I have noticed more paranormal researchers stepping back from their work, taking stock, and reassessing what it is they want to gain from their endeavors.
Across the board, there appears to be an abandonment of the dogma that has for so long held down their research and, in many cases, a cessation to the work itself. Many are now refocusing their energies on family, career, and personal growth. Gone are the angry diatribes that harangued readers about government cover-ups or the lamentations on proper paranormal protocol.
The first I noticed step aside was Blogsquatcher who wrote thoughtfully about Bigfoot, etc... However, prior to his departure, he posited increasingly fantastic explanations for crypto phenomena. It seemed a harbinger of things to come, of his own dissatisfaction with the answers at hand. Others in recent times followed similar paths. The infamous Ghost Divas broke up due, in large part, to conflicts over the didactic nature of paranormal research-a dictate that says: we've got the answers, follow the plan. Now I've seen rumblings from Paul Kimball as well as the UFOiconoclast(s) that speak of the same dissatisfaction and need for perspective.
More and more, I see researchers who are crawling forth from the morass of stagnant thought and seeking to embrace the unknown. I think I can count myself among these. In all honesty, I don't think we're going to find many answers--at least not by the methods most are choosing to employ.
I think maybe it is time to put down the EMF detectors and get back to using our eyes, but more importantly to enjoying ourselves, our families, and our interests. In my research as a writer of paranormal mysteries, I have often conducted my own investigations. I tried all the tricks--lots of them, at least. And I've read all the research (both of merit and of disgrace) without once feeling as if someone had really broken through. I think if there is a scientific explanation, it may involve a quantum leap forward in our understanding of the universe(s) around us. We're not there yet. So, I'm not surprised that so many have decided to say, "You know what? It's not worth all this trouble."
On my last few ghost hunts, I did just that. I hunted ghosts. I gave myself over to the experience. And, frankly, I enjoyed myself. For the first time in a while, I enjoyed the adventure. I'm not saying throw science out. No, I still firmly believe we need solid scientific work to understand these phenomena. Nor would I ever advance that what I had been doing was anything more than thrill-seeking. I'm just saying that I don't think any of the old ways are working, that any of the old ideas are germane, and that we are any closer to understanding these mysteries than we were at the dawn of the 20th Century.
There are a great many problems in our world that could use the same concerted effort so many have put into fruitless pursuits. So, I say let us pursue all that goes bump in the night, keep our eyes open and learn what we can, but remember to keep some perspective about it all. Who knows, you may just find yourself falling in love with it all over again.

Time: Between 9:20 p.m. to 9:40 p.m.
Dear Brian, In the email body below is a little account of the anomaly myself and 3 other witnesses seen. It happened roughly between 9:20 PM to 9:40 PM. I don't have the exact time because wrist watches don't work on me, so I gave up on them and nobody else had the exact time, but when we walked back to the car it was 10:05pm and it was about a 10 minute walk we also stayed there for about 5 minutes after seeing it. The date was Saturday January 24th 2009. Location was in Grimsby, Ontario right bye the shores of Lake Ontario. It's in the Northwestern corner of the Lake and Between Hamilton and St.Catherine's, Ontario.The two other witnesses wish to remain unknown but can be contacted through telephone. The third witness was my young son.
In the pictures it is the same object but in two different colours. All I did was blown them up 3 separate times for each of the 2 pictures. I took a few more pictures but nothing came up, just the pictures I'm sending you.
Through the binoculars it had the 4 colours in pattern of green, white, yellow and red. But when we took the pictures it came out as solid white and solid red? The object moved a lot slower than a plane. To put it in perspective when the plane flew in when we first started to notice the object the plane was seen and gone in about 2 minutes if that. The movement of the object seemed to be coming in a capital L direction reversed from the St.Catherine's area toward Grimsby, then out toward the United States part of the Lake.
If you need to call or get in touch with the other witnesses, they said they will talk via telephone. After all this we joked with each other and went to believe it or not the Flying Saucer Restaurant for a bite to eat and warm up with coffee in Niagara Falls at 6768 Lundy's Lane. It was a cold typical Canadian night.

Extrasensory perception is a collective term for various hypothetical mental abilities. These abilities (along with other paranormal phenomena) are also referred to as psi.
The major types of ESP are:
* Telepathy - the ability to read another person's thoughts
* Clairvoyance - the ability to "see" events or objects happening somewhere else
* Precognition - the ability to see the future
* Retrocognition - the ability to see into the distant past
* Mediumship - the ability to channel dead spirits
* Psychometry - the ability to read information about a person or place by touching a physical object
A closely related psi phenomenon, not technically part of ESP, is telekinesis, the ability to alter the physical world with mind power alone.
All of these abilities are based on the idea that human beings can perceive things beyond the scope of known bodily senses. This concept has been around since the beginning of human civilization, under many different names, but the modern conception didn't develop until the first half of the 20th century. The term ESP itself was coined in 1934, by Duke University professor J.B. Rhine, one of the first respected scientists to conduct paranormal research in a university laboratory.
ESP believers around the world have different ideas of how these abilities manifest themselves. Some people believe everybody possesses these abilities, and we involuntarily experience moments of ESP all the time. Others say only a handful of psychics, shamans or mediums have the special power, and that they can only access this power when they put themselves into a special mental state. Most believers think that everybody has the potential for ESP, but that some people are more in tune with their paranormal abilities than others.
Believers also disagree on how ESP actually works. One theory says that, like our ordinary senses, ESP is energy moving from one point to another point. Typically, proponents of this theory say ESP energy takes the form of electromagnetic waves -- just like light, radio and X-ray energy -- that we haven't been able to detect scientifically.
This theory was fairly popular in the early 20th century, but it's out of favor today due to several inherent problems. For one thing, the explanation only accounts for telepathy, not clairvoyance or precognition. Presumably, if the information travels as electromagnetic energy, it has to be sent by someone -- it has to travel from mind to mind. It doesn't explain how information would move through time or from an object to a mind.
Secondly, the theory doesn't jibe with what we know about ourselves and the universe. In most reported cases of telepathy, ESP works totally independent of distance. That is, the power of the "signal" is the same whether the transmitting mind and the receiving mind are in the same room or on opposite sides of the earth. No other form of energy behaves this way, skeptics point out, so it doesn't make sense that "psi waves" would either. Furthermore, it seems strange that we haven't found any unexplained sense organs in the body that might pick up on this energy, nor any evidence of the energy waves themselves.
In light of these problems, the prevailing theory among believers today is that ESP is a result of something beyond the known physical world. For example, many people view it as "spillover" from another reality. According to this theory, in addition to the physical universe we are consciously aware of, we all exist in another dimension that has completely different governing laws. Time and space work very differently in the other reality, allowing us to know about other people's thoughts, distant events or things that haven't happened yet in the physical reality. Normally, our awareness of this plane of existence is completely unconscious, but every once in a while, the conscious mind picks up on this information.
Needless to say, this theory is also completely outside our scientific understanding of the world. But, according to the theory's proponents, it's not supposed to fit into that conception. Like the concepts of God or an afterlife, the hypothetical reality would not rely on the physical laws of the universe. It would depend on the existence of a soul of some sort.
So, given that it's completely at odds with our understanding of the world, why do so many people believe in ESP? In the next section, we'll find out some of the reasons for this belief, and we'll see what scientific evidence supports it.

Robert Hasting's recent wild flight of fantasy (July 2) is titled "CSI Skeptic Robert Sheaffer Doubts the U.S. Government Uses the Media to Debunk UFOs." In it he suggests we skeptics are knowingly or not doing the government's work debunking UFOs, and makes a major error in the very first sentence! "He refers to me as "a leading spokesman for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI)," which is surely not the case (although he does spell my name correctly, a rarity in UFO texts). I do not speak for CSI(COP), nor does anyone else unless authorized to do so. The contents of my Blog BadUFOs.com, my column and book Psychic Vibrations," and all my other writings are mine alone. What I write represents only my own opinion, and you - as well as CSI - are free to agree or disagree.
Hastings says that I "apparently dismiss the idea that the U.S. government might be using the media to help debunk UFOs." Let's clarify this: I AM QUITE EXPLICITLY DISMISSING THE IDEA THAT THE U.S. GOVERNMENT IS USING THE MEDIA, OR ANY OTHER SOURCES, TO HELP DEBUNK UFOS. Let's face it, there is no subject that the U.S. government shows less interest in and cares less about than UFOs. They'd rather give spare change to the homeless than deal with a UFO fanatic. In fact, when somebody approaches them with a sighting of a UFO, or a question or claim about one, the government official groans, squirms, and tries to ignore the matter as best possible. They - the "civil servants" - have been through this many times before. For any government official or agency that touches the UFO controversy in any way, it's a no-win situation, as the Air Force found out the hard way. No matter what you tell the hard-core believers, if it's anything short of "Martians are here," they'll accuse you of cover-up and conspiracy for as long as they live.
Hastings quotes Hansen saying "If the [CIA] had wanted to set up a front organization to debunk the UFO phenomenon, it could have hardly done a better job than to infiltrate CSICOP and encourage its media management activities." This is laughable. There are only about a half-dozen active UFO skeptics in CSI(COP). If suddenly a group of government types turned up and wanted fervently to promote UFO skepticism, we would notice that at once! Besides, the Fellows and Consultants of CSI(COP) receive no payment. If the government were funding our activities, we would all be much better-off. I wouldn't be driving a 20-year-old car!
Hastings refers to his own "expos'e" of "Sheaffer's 'skeptical' organization's intriguing but almost completely unpublicized links to the U.S. government's nuclear weapons program." By which he means two people (out of dozens of Fellows, Scientific Consultants, and other officials). Kendrick Frazier, longtime editor of "The Skeptical Inquirer," is described as having "worked for over 20 years as a public relations spokesman for one of the leading nuclear weapons labs in the United States," Sandia Labs in Albuquerque. What Hastings doesn't say is that Frazier was a science writer and editor of Skeptical Inquirer" long before he joined Sandia. Perhaps this is an example of a skeptic infiltrating the military establishment, instead of vice-versa?
CSI(COP) Fellow James Oberg is also mentioned:
From 1970-72, Oberg was an Air Force officer whose assignments with the Battle Environments Branch at the weapons lab involved the development and utilization of computer codes related to the modeling of laser and nuclear weapons. Oberg also served as a "Security Officer" while at the weapons lab and was, therefore, responsible for monitoring the security procedures used to safeguard the classified documents generated by his group.Let's see, that was over 40 years ago, years before CSI(COP) was founded. Since leaving the military, Oberg worked for a NASA contractor on the Space Shuttle program, and now is a full-time space writer for clients such as NBC. But he is apparently a government conspirator. Then there's good old Uncle Phil, who was indeed on a first-name basis with many Washington insiders, and wasn't shy about name-dropping when he wanted to boast. Klass knew these intelligence and military leaders because of his work on the magazine fondly known as "Aviation Leak."
You forgot to mention James McGaha, who is very upset at being overlooked! Really, you are doing very sloppy research if you didn't even turn up anything on McGaha. He is a retired Air Force officer and pilot who held a Top Secret clearance and worked in military operations that actually involved nuclear weapons. Of course, James has long been retired from the Air Force, but he must be part of the conspiracy, too.
And you also forgot to mention former intelligence-types John Alexander, Bruce Maccabee, Karl Pflock, etc. - but wait - they're on the other side! Maybe the government has been paying them to PROMOTE BELIEF in UFOs? Why did former CIA director Vice Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter join NICAP? To help promote UFOs?
This obsession by Conspiracy Theorists with the CIA is especially humorous because, as John T. Carlson points out:
"... the CIA would never commit such an act without legal precedence -- and the CIA just doesnt have it in regard to U.S.-based organizations. They deal entirely with foreign intelligence gathering and distribution. Only the NSA and FBI act in regard to U.S. undercover assignments. The CIA simply couldnt justify such an act under any conditions, and all three branches of the government would pounce on them hard, Shere Kahn-like, for even suggesting such internal interference within a U.S.-based organization, regardless of international membership. Theyd produce and star in their own little C-SPAN production, featuring the Justice Department on lead guitar, and the Supreme Court on drums supplying the back beat. Do these guys ever take into account federal law? The fact that they ALWAYS blame the CIA leads me to believe that they dont know what the hell theyre talking about."Indeed.
