Five teams competing for the 30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE have just been awarded a combined 5.25 million for meeting significant milestones in developing a robot that can safely land on the surface of the moon, travel 500 meters over the lunar surface, and send mooncasts back to the Earth. A tiny startup from India, Team Indus, with no experience in robotics or space flight just won 1 million of this prize. It stood head to head with companies that had been funded by billionaires, had received the assistance of NASA, and had the support of leading universities.
The good news is that governments no longer have a monopoly on space exploration. In two or three decades, we will have entrepreneurs taking us on private spaceflights to the moon. That is what has become possible.
What has changed since the days of the Apollo moon landings is that the cost of building technologies has dropped exponentially. What cost billions of dollars then costs millions now, and sometimes even less. Our smartphones have computers that are more powerful than the Cray supercomputers of yesteryear - which had strict export controls and cost tens of millions of dollars. We carry high-definition cameras in our pockets that are more powerful than those on NASA spacecraft. The cameras in the Mars Curiosity Rover, for example, have a resolution of 2 megapixels with 8GB of flash memory, the same as our clunky first-generation iPhones. The Apollo Guidance Computer, which took humans to the moon in 1966, had a 2.048 MHz processor - slower than those you find in calculators and musical greeting cards.
The same technologies as are available in the United States and Europe are available worldwide. Innovation has globalized.
I met Team Indus while I was in Mumbai to speak at INK last November. When they told me they were competing for the Google Lunar XPRIZE. I didn't take them seriously because I had seen their counterpart in Silicon Valley, Moon Express, which has the support of tech moguls such as Naveen Jain. How could a scrawny little startup in Bangalore take on Naveen Jain, former NASA engineer Bob Richards, and NASA itself, I thought. The Moon Express team is a force of nature, has the advantage of being on the NASA Ames Research campus, and has been given R">Team Indus was also up against Astrobotic, which is a spinoff from the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute, and Israel-based SpaceIL, which has the backing of the country's top research institutes.
The company's win blew my mind. Even though the subject of my INK talk was how Indian entrepreneurs could help change the world, I didn't think it was already happening.

The Bangalore-based startup was founded by former I.T. executive Rahul Narayan and four of his friends: an Air Force pilot, a marketing executive, an investment banker, and an aerospace engineer. None of the team had experience in building spacecraft or robots, yet they were able to build technology that could navigate to the moon.
Narayan says he expects completion of his space mission to cost around 30 million. Moon Express chief executive Bob Richards estimates 50 million. These numbers are higher than the 20 million prize that they hope to win. But both see far greater opportunities: They hope to be pioneers in what could be a trillion-dollar industry. Richards is looking to mine the moon for minerals and bring them back to Earth. Each payload could be worth billions.
The Google Lunar XPRIZE has 26 teams competing from around the world. Collectively, they will spend in the hundreds of millions of dollars on their efforts. For them, it is not all about winning the contest; many of the losers will still commercialize their space technologies or put their knowledge to use in other fields. This is the power of such competitions. They lead entrants to spend multiples of the offered purse on innovative solutions. And they motivate people outside the industry, such as Narayan, to enter it with out-of-the-box thinking.
Innovation prizes are not new. In fact, a number of celebrated historical feats were made possible, in part, by the desire to win these prizes. In the 1920s, New York hotel owner Raymond Orteig offered a 25,000 prize to the first person to fly non-stop between New York and Paris. Several unsuccessful attempts were made before an American airmail pilot named Charles Lindbergh won the competition in 1927 with his plane, "The Spirit of St. Louis".
Lindbergh's achievement made him a national hero and a global celebrity. And it sparked the interest and investment that led to the modern aviation industry.
That is what I expect will come of the Lunar XPRIZE. And that is why I am looking forward to booking my round-trip ticket to the moon one summer in the 2030s.

I live in the country and alot of deer come in my yard to eat apples. Something in the sky caught my eye. When I looked up, there was a long cylinder shaped object with protrusions on its side that was shooting out short bursts of light like a ray and it was ascending. It only moved a short distance at I would say a medium speed (but faster than an airplane) before it stopped. It stayed right where it was until it disappeared. If I would hold a dime up at arms length, it would have been covered by the dime. I watched it for about a minute. It would flash a light now and then. I decided I had to get my husband up to see this even though he has to get up at 3:00 a.m everyday to leave for work at 4:00 a.m. So I got him up, told him there was something weird, maybe a satellite in the sky. He went outside with me and I showed him the object. He said he could only see the light(s) but he only saw the one and possibly due to his eyesight or being just awakened, he could not see the shape. He grunted "Im going back to bed, have fun (or something like that)" and went back to bed. Thinking, "Im not going to have a witness", I ran to my computer and posted on FB " theres a UFO in the southern sky right now OMG". Then I got on my boots and a hat and went back outside, but this time I stepped off the porch and down the steps. At that time, the object was still where it was when I had gone inside. Its lights were still emitting a flash of light now & then. I looked up and in a semi-circle, that was facing the first object were approximately 6 or 7 more of this same thing. They were also flashing their lights and it was all simultaneously. I stood and watched them for another minute or two, then they all just disappeared! There was only blackness where the objects had been. I waited a few more minutes, but they did not re-appear. I went back into my house and continued what I was doing on the computer. About 45 minutes later, my curiousity got the better of me and I went back outside and down the steps. I did not see anything where they had been before, but when I looked South- South West, I saw one of these objects. Looking more, I spottd 4 or 5 more, and again, they were flashing their lights in unison. I probably only watchd them for a minute, then suddenly a beam of light came out of each of them..at the same time. The beams were not as bright as when their lights would flash, but were very visible. The beams came out of the crafts at an angle, like 4 o'clock on a clock in reference to the top of the craft being 12 oclock. I only watched these beams for about 15-20 seconds, then it was like a cloud covered the objects. I could see the lights flash, but not as brightly. It was almost like there was a shroud over them, but I could tell they were stil there. And then they were gone. Poof! I posted a bit about this on my FB page then in the morning I went to WTTE Fox 28s FB page and posted asking if anyone else had seen this. Is it a coincidence that later that day, there were 4 big gray helicopters fly in the same path that the objects did, TWICE? By the way, Ive been in the same home for almost 17 years and have never seen more than one helicopter at a time and its usually life flight. I don't know. I'm not a UFO crazy. I don't watch shows about UFOs but I have seen some unexplained things before, but never something like this. I called my brother who is retired from the Marine Corps and he told me to report this sighting to you, MUFON. I just realised I'm supposed to tell you my feelings. I am amazed, excited and a bit nervous. The thought DID cross my mind "is this an Alien invasion?" Oh well. You can call me if you need to. " A noted activist against government secrecy has encountered a wall of silence in his FOIA requests to find out about the Central Intelligence Agency budget figures for 1947/8. The agency claims that they "are unable to locate" such fiscal records. Is the reason that they are "missing" because this was the very same time frame as that of the UFO crash near Roswell in July of 1947? There is now solid reason to support that there was a deliberate attempt at that time to hide operational expenditures that related to the crash. This includedfunds and allocation of capital resources for investigations, retrieval, transport, storage, security and study of the crash debris and bodies. Just as this author has found (as reported in books and in an online article series on the "memory metal" debris) that there exists a technical paper trail"related to the crash- there must also be a "fiscal paper trail". And in both cases it appears that there have been early and active efforts to make it difficult for anyone to follow these trails.
CIA SAYS: "WE CAN' T FIND THE RECORDS"
Steve Aftergood is a published engineer and directs the Federation of American Scientists "Project on Government Secrecy." He has spearheaded efforts at government records declassification and in reforming government secrecy and privacy policy for decades. He was instrumental in filing historic Freedom of Information Act lawsuits which led for the first time to the declassification and publication of total intelligence budgets under FOIA request. But when Aftergood filed FOIA requests with the CIA for its budget records for 1947/8, the agency's initial reply is that his request was denied. The agency cited applicable FOIA exemptions to such requests, including national security related exemptions. Over several years in the 2000's Aftergood filed several complaints and appeals to compel the CIA release of this fiscal year budget information. It had prior released other requested years and time spans, but strangely denied this specific request for the Roswell-year budget records.
Changing about face on what it had originally stated, the CIA finally wrote to Aftergood, "WE ARE UNABLE TO LOCATE A DOCUMENT CONTAINING, OR A SERIES OF DOCUMENTS FROM WHICH WE MAY DEDUCE, THE US INTELLIGENCE BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 1947"." They indicated that the same holds true for the year immediately after the crash, 1948. This was an active, post-Roswell year. This was the year that military were letting contracts to Battelle Memorial Institute to study Roswellian "memory metal" (see prior articles) and the year that likely other outside studies were begun that required fiscal expenditure.
A decade on from Aftergood's last FOIA action on this, the CIA's last response seems to be their final. And it appears that Aftergood has now exhausted all if his administrative remedies to gain access to the requested records. In dialog with this author, Aftergood himself indicates that he believes now that the reason for the missing budget information is due to "poor record management" and "over-classification." But there are clues that can be culled from a careful review of the testimony made by those who were administrators at the Roswell base in 1947. And these clues -which have nothing to do with mismanagement- tell of a different reason, and they help us to understand just why these CIA fiscal records may really remain unavailable to the public.
ROSWELL OFFICERSMUDDIED FINANCIAL WATERS
According to three officers confirmed to have been at Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) in July of 1947, they deliberately destroyed, omitted or otherwise 'changed up' expenditures, disbursements and other "paper trails"that related to the crash. And obviously this was done under orders.
RICHARD CLAYTON HARRIS
Richard Harris was the Budget and Fiscal Officer at RAAF, including that 1947 summer of the crash. Many years later, before his death, Harris opened up that it was in fact a "spaceship" that had fallen to earth. He confessed that there were bodies temporarily stored in a hangar, and that Walter Haut, the officer who issued the press release on the crash event, knew the true nature of the craft, telling Harris in front of the hangar holding the crash debris, that it was extraterrestrial and that it was piloted.
In an interview some time ago with author and Roswell research team member Kevin Randle, Harris confirmed that the crash was of an alien vehicle. Harris' daughter Ann states that her father had "ALLOTTED FUNDS NECESSARY FOR THE CLEANUP AND COVER UP. DAD ALLOTTED THE FUNDS TO PAY FOR HOUSING AND FOOD FOR EXTRA PERSONNEL, AND FOR EXTRA FUEL FOR UNSCHEDULED FLIGHTS OUT TO FT. WORTH AND TO WRIGHT. No such expenditure records have ever been found- and were made not be by someone. According to Ann, her father was found murdered in his home just six months after his appearance on TV with Kevin Randle. She states that in addition to Albuquerque Police there were CIA Agents investigating the incident as well.
COL. PATRICK SAUNDERS
Colonel Patrick Saunders was the Base Adjutant at RAAF in the summer of 1947. As administrative Adjutant, he must have known and worked with Richard Harris. Many years ago when reached by researchers, Saunders laughed of the crash incident, later telling them illusively, "I can't specify anything." After her father's death, Saunder's daughter wrote to Kevin Randle saying of her father that: "AT ONE POINT HE BRAGGED TO ME ABOUT HOW WELL HE COVERED UP THE PAPER TRAIL"ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLEAN-UP."
CLAIRE MILLER
Claire Miller was stationed at the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) Washington, DC headquarters in July of 1947. CIC officer Sheridan Cavitt is confirmed to have made an investigation with Major Jesse Marcel from RAAF at the Foster ranch where the object had fallen. When Miller (who likely knew Cavitt) was reached by author Karl Pflock in 1980, Miller was evasive, chuckled and tried to change the topic away from Roswell. In a follow-up letter to Pflock the former CIC administratorcuriously wrote, "I HAVE NO RECOLLECTION RELATING TO THE ROSWELL/CORONA CRASH CASE". "I WAS STATIONED IN WASHINGTON, DC AT THE TIME. I MAY HAVE APPROVED INVESTIGATIVE EXPENDITURES RELATING TO THAT CASE, BUT THAT WAS 46 YEARS AGO OF WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE AND MY MIND IS BLANK! Blank indeed. In his reply Miller is tacitly admitting financial oversight involvement.
HIDDEN PAPER TRAILS
Paper trails -written evidence- can prove very tricky maze to find and to navigate once found. It took years of circling back and making connections from various journals and contracts to discover that Battelle was retained by Wright Patterson to work on memory metal in the months following the Roswell crash. A similar financial forensic analysis may prove to be equally productive. Dealing with enormity of fallen ET craft and creatures costs money, it necessarily involves expenditure. Is it mere coincidence and mishandling that accounts for the CIA's account of why they can't come up with budget information for that critical period of time, but they can -and do- for other years? Given what the Roswell officers above have said, I think not. There has to be some indication somewhere of a "Roswell financial paper trail" of funding, expenses and disbursement associated with 66 years of keeping the alien secret.

Alarmed Belgians started to report disc-like objects in the sky on November 25, 1989. These were later believed to be the result of an elaborate nightclub show, but that didn't change the fact that UFO fever had hit the European nation in a big way. THE "CASE" A black isosceles triangle (shown above) with dancing lights was first spotted by a pair of police officers. No military activity in the region caused the sighting and ultimately, an estimated 13,500 people witnessed the event. Other witnesses of the object claimed that they heard a sound that resembled the noise that a ventilator makes. They also believed that an object similar to a turbine was spinning behind the apparent alien spacecraft. SOBEPS, the largest UFO organization in Belgium, released at least two volumes detailing the incidents. ALTERNATIVE THEORY While it may be disappointing to individuals who put a great deal of stock into the Belgian triangles, at least one scientist argued that the original sighting was caused by exhaust. A pollution cloud coming from a nearby power facility might very well have radiated enough heat to warp the air. Anyone driving on a hot road has seen what heat can do to one's vision. The lights, for that matter, might very well have come from a smokestack. Regardless of what caused them, the triangles did cause quite a stir in the small country at the time. What are your thoughts on UFO's in general? Is there enough evidence that alien crafts are visiting Earth on a regular basis? I remain skeptical however If I were to personally see something in the sky resembling the image above, I have to admit I'd most certainly be alarmed (at the very least). Alas, to date I have yet to personally see a real-life UFO despite the many hours I've spent examining the night sky over the years. Perhaps someday I'll catch a glimpse of something that is worth investigating further. Until then, I'll continue to indulge my fascination with all the other great things going on "up there". As we near the 12 anniversary of what is commonly and erroneously labeled the Phoenix Lights, in retrospect it's difficult to believe so much time has passed; it seems as if it were only a couple of years ago that my wife and I witnessed the "Massive V-Shaped Craft" from our then home in Chandler Arizona; for almost 4400 days that image has been seared into my mind's eye. I still vividly remember the entire sighting, which occurred at 8:30 pm MST. I've been told on many occasions that over time, thoughts and memories fade and total recall starts to diminish. Well, not this one!
I still give thanks almost daily for being allowed the opportunity to view with my own eyes one of the greatest UFO sightings in history. We (my wife and I) were at the perfect angle at the right time and place to have the opportunity of a lifetime. Being able to witness a mile-long "alien craft," from which I believe comes from another dimension, has been by far the greatest visual experience of my 55 years of life on earth.
I'm not writing this to sway public opinion or change anyone's mind. I am writing this to express gratitude for what I was a part of and to publicly say, "Thank you Lord" for allowing me to see this for myself; something that we have been told all of our lives "does not exist!"
I first came forward on Saturday morning March 15, 1997, in a phone call to Mr. Walter Andress of MUFON in Sequin, Texas; from that point on I haven't stopped talking about this life-changing experience. I have met and shared our encounter with hundreds of other "eight o'clock witnesses" and the database is overwhelming as to the scope and magnitude of the event throughout the great state of Arizona. What was once thought of as a mere set of lights beginning near Kingman, is now known to be much larger in scale with multiple mile long V shaped objects, a massive 2 mile-wide triangle and a mile wide disc (and that's not all).
Not just one set of lights by a long shot!
It's a fact that the listening and viewing public have been lied to from the very beginning! Without a doubt the real story has never been told. This is what motivated me to write, The Non-Investigation of the Phoenix Lights. I have known from my very first interviews that the media (producers) do not care if the truth is ever told. They wish to sanitize the story so it is more believable (accepted) by the public. In other words; they change or don't report all the facts; thus, they lie to you. Because they feel that sometimes the truth is much too strong for the sheeple and the truth needs to be altered so we can sleep tonight without worrying about something we have no control of. Sickening, isn't it?
Concerning the Phoenix Lights case: "they" changed the facts and continually show the 10 PM flare videos (there are 6 of them) while interviewing the eight o'clock witnesses. This deception is a huge slap in the face to the witnesses of the "actual craft," and a total lie to any who read or watched the events and testimonies of The Massive UFO Flyover of Arizona, March 13, 1997. All one has to do is ask a non-witness about the Phoenix Lights sightings on March 13, 1997, and most will say, "Oh, yeah they were flares!" The eight o'clock witnesses just shake their heads left to right in frustration. The diversion has succeeded and the truth will probably never be told as minds have already been made up.
So, I ask myself, "What can I do?" Does anyone other than the witnesses really care? Does anyone know about or care about the MSTI-3 satellite that was disabled early on March 13th 1997? Does anyone care about the witnesses who watched in awe at 5:30 pm near Crown King, AZ., as 3 massive V shaped craft in daylight pancaked on top of each other"; then turned into a white ball of light and vanished as 2 fighter jets approached from the south? Does anyone care that the 8:16 pm MST witnesses in Paulden, AZ., included retired US Army Major named Lyle Vann, not a retired police officer as was written in summaries and books? Does anyone care about being "historically correct" as much as we possibly can? I do!
Does anyone care that drivers on I-17, I-10, US60 and many other highways and roads throughout the state pulled over and got out of their vehicles to watch in disbelief what was passing in their field of vision? Does anyone care if a little league game came to a halt as a massive craft silently passed overhead? And does anyone care if a police search and rescue team practicing in the north valley witnessed the same thing and the helicopter pilot absolutely refused to go up and check it out? What about the airborne flight instructor from Embry-Riddle? As he looked down he assumed there was a power outage, only to become aware of the massive V shaped craft passing under him; in his own words he stated, "I thought he was going to die!" Does anyone care? Does anyone care about the retired airline captain who claimed he could land his 737 on the wing of the massive V shaped craft? Again, does anyone really care?
I mean, after all it was just flares, right?
Throughout the past twelve years, I've looked back and realized just how lucky I've been. I mean I've done 2 episodes of Strange Universe, 2 documentaries for stations in Tokyo, Japan; I've also been privileged to do dozens of television interviews and at least 60 radio interviews. I was invited to do the Leeza Gibbons show, as well. How often does one get to fly to Los Angeles, get a limo ride to Paramount Studios, have your name on your door, a catered private lunch and get to meet Leeza! Wow! Well, I did. It was very cool indeed and one of the best times I've had.
I have for the most part always been open to share my experience-again without requiring compensation. There have been a few witnesses and or investigators who've penned books and or produced DVDs etc; however, making a buck hasn't been a precedence for me.
I did an interview with Dr Lynne Kitei for her book and DVD. Actually, I'm a large part of the video she sells and my 8:30 sighting is told in great detail. I do appreciate her for allowing me to do that. She asked me dozens of questions and allowed my views of March 13, 1997 to be told in my own words. I do not agree with her on her 10 PM video as UFO; rather I pretty much agree that those 10 pm videos are more than likely flares, intentionally ignited at high altitude (17,000') to create a diversion to take away attention from the earlier events of the massive crafts.
The strangest part of my association with Dr Lynne took place at a MUFON meeting in Mesa, AZ a couple months ago; she approached me and said, "I'm also an eight o'clock witness to the massive V shaped craft! I just never came forward because I didn't take any pictures!" What? So, for the last 11.5 years why have you been focused on the 10 pm video you shot, trying to divorce it from the other flare footage and claming it was of an authentic UFO? Most agree that the 10 pm videos are in fact flares, so now you claim to be an eight o'clock witness as well? Are you kidding me? And for the past 11.5 years with all your interviews, television and radio shows-you never made this claim! Now you are a witness to the large craft?
Does anyone else find this peculiar? Very early on, the majority of eight o'clock hour witnesses became cognizant of the disparity between the "large craft" cruising "low and slow," opposed to the distant lights up and beyond the Estrellas; to say that people were adamant about their "craft sighting," in contrast to flares would be an understatement! Dr. Lynne has fought tooth and nail for her "10:00 video" to be disassociated with flares-never during this time has she given any inkling that she observed the "craft" in the eight o'clock hour! I find this new revelation very curious to be polite.
One part of the March 13th massive statewide sightings that never really gets examined is the official statements made by the USAF and government pertaining to the events; they did not claim that the dropping of flares were responsible for the "earlier events" (eight o'clock hour). Instead what was said was this, "at no point in time was there a threat to the security of the United States". Thus, my interpretation would be that since there was no threat, then it (the UFOs) would be considered a friendly. The FOIA from Luke AFB did not call the earlier events as planes, flares, blimps, balloons, or any other man made objects. Instead the FOIA reports the USAF as calling the "objects" as unusual aerial sightings. They also report that no Luke AFB craft were involved in the "phenomena" reported on the night of 13 Mar 97.
Since our sighting nearly twelve years ago, my wife and I have become very good sky watchers. We have spent many hundreds of hours watching the skies for a return visit, hoping this time to get "it" (or them) on film. I really feel that what we got to see that night might be considered a "once in a lifetime" sighting and we have accepted that as a possibility. However, whenever outside no matter what the length of time might be, I am always aware of my surroundings and I still take a moment to scan the skies.
So, in closing I wish to say something from my heart, "I do not believe in UFOs or aliens-I know "they exist!"

This report covers two seperate UFO sightings by a musician named Russell Davies, who lives in the Birmingham area. His first sighting took place in mid November 2005, and his second on 4th January 2010. With both sightings a second witness was also present, and both have some very interesting aspects to them.
November 2005 Sighting
In 2005, Russell lived in a house on Berners Street, Lozells, Birmingham, with his girlfriend Stephanie Holyoak. At 8pm one evening in mid-November, they stepped out into the back garden so Russell could have a cigarette. It was a clear still night, and some stars were visible between patchy cloud. Russell suddenly noticed at the edge of his vision some lights in the sky. He looked towards the East in the direction the lights were coming from, and immediately spotted what looked like two very bright white orbs of light. These orbs appeared to be independent of one another. They were at quite a high altitude, Russell believes at least 1000 feet up.

The orbs were moving at an extremely fast speed, much faster than a plane would pass across the sky. They appeared to be moving at thousands of miles an hour. They were leaving no trails behind them and appeared to be flying side by side. They passed overhead and began flying away to the West on a straight course. Russell alerted Stephanie to the lights and she glanced up just in time to see them. She exclaimed "Oh yes...what's that?" When Russell spoke of the orbs, some assumed they may have been earth lights, but Russell does not believe this explanation. The speed they travelled at was stunning, much too fast to be aircraft.
Sighting Analysis
It seems very unlikely that the objects seen were earth lights, these do not tend to appear over urban areas and do not traverse the entire sky on a straight flight path. It is also improbable they were meteorites - it is extremely rare to see more than one meteorite at any one moment. Also meteorites travel across the sky within a split second, the orbs seen were moving too slow to be meteorites, yet too fast to be conventional aircraft.
It is not known whether or not the orbs were two lights on a single larger object, however Russell believes they were two separate objects flying in formation. This is certainly an interesting sighting and one which I believe could well have been something out of the ordinary.
January 2010 Sighting
At 5.30pm on 4th January 2010, Russell was out in a van on the main road out of Birmingham, in the area of Balsall. He was sitting in the passenger seat.

It was a cold and overcast evening but was also quite still. Looking out of the front windscreen he suddenly noticed an orange glowing orb of light within half a mile of his position, in the sky off to the right of the road. He pointed it out to the driver of the van, Michael Tingle, who initially assumed it was an aeroplane. It was hard to judge how big the object was, but Russell believes it was about 10 feet across. He estimates it was a few hundred yards high, and he was viewing it at a 30 degree angle from the van. As he and Michael watched, the orb crossed the road ahead of them. It looked to be moving about 50 mph. It remained hovering over fields to the left of the road. As the van past the object, it appeared to follow the van on the passenger side. It remained at the same velocity as the van for about 10 seconds. Michael did not see this as he had to keep his eyes on the road, but Russell informed him what was taking place.

Russell felt that the object was aware of their presence and was watching them. It then slowly faded away from the top down over about 5 seconds, during which time it continued to move alongside the van. After it had vanished, Russell felt the object was still there but no longer visible, almost to let them know it was something out of the ordinary. In total the sighting lasted for about 40 seconds.

Sighting Analysis
You may look at this sighting and immediately dismiss the object as nothing more than a Chinese lantern. Certainly some of the aspects of the sighting could fit this explanation. Lanterns are often reported as looking like bright glowing orange orbs of light. Russell admits it was hard to tell the exact distance and size of the object. Other than the way that the object appeared to follow the van and match its speed, there were no other manoeuvres which would indicate it was under control. Could this movement have been down to a sudden change in air current direction? Or even an optical illusion due to the direction/distance of the object? The way that the object slowly vanished over 5 seconds could be put down to the flame inside it burning out.
However Russell has clearly stated that he believes the object was something else entirely, for a number of valid reasons. He has seen lanterns drifting in the sky at night on numerous occasions before. He says that the object was much more solid and spherical than a lantern would usually appear. It was a still evening, yet the object appeared to be travelling at quite a speed. It also appeared to be too low to be caught in high altitude air currents. It suddenly altered its course as the van drove past and then appeared to track the moving vehicle, keeping in line with the passenger side window. Russell found this movement to be very controlled and deliberate. Lanterns have been known to remain lit for up to 45 minutes - if it was a lantern it seems very coincidental that it would burn out shortly after changing course alongside the van.
So with this particular sighting I reach an open verdict. Lantern or not? Some aspects point towards this being the case, but others tend to suggest otherwise. Ultimately it is up to you to decide what you want to believe.
