However, a Fort Smith, AR veterinarian said that he was familiar with these animals and didn't believe it was one. Dr. Mary Whitmore, a professor of zoology at the University of Oklahoma, deemed that the specimen would never be identified. But another scientist, after studying it for several hours, concluded it was a new world camel (such as an alpaca, llama, or vicu~na). Others scientists weighed in with their opinion that it was nothing more than the calf of a domestic cow.
Pryor was a bit disheartened that none were able to identify the animal conclusively. And yet the nascent mystery intrigued the Arkansas man. So, Pryor returned to where he discovered the animal in hopes of finding more of it. If he had a more complete skeleton, perhaps scientists would then be able to readily identify the animal.
While he found no further bones, Pryor did find some strange fibers embedded within nearby cattle tracks. Thinking these might be related somehow, he had them analyzed by Greg Fox, a DNA specialist in Ventura Co., California and the aforementioned Dr. Mary Whitmore.
Both, it is said, told Pryor that the fibers were not made up of any DNA known to exist. It would seem, however, the two scientists were saying that the fibers contained no DNA whatsoever. They were instead comprised of aluminum, silicon, calcium, and copper.
This is nothing unusual. Alloys made from these three metals are common and calcium is added in certain processes to strengthen the newly-forged metal blend.
It would seem Pryor met a dead end in his quest to understand the nature of the creature.
At some point during the excitement surrounding the find, it was reported that the popular television program, "Unsolved Mysteries" was interested in reporting the story. If true, they must not have liked what their investigation turned up, since no episode ever aired featuring the strange animal found in the wilds of Arkansas.
Later, as this strange story spread across the Internet, certain facts have become confused. For instance, in paring down the story to only its most salient details, the fact that DNA testing was done only on the fibers is frequently left out. The story perpetuates into cyberspace as DNA tests having been done on the animal, proving that it is not of this world. Further confusion arises when the fibers become metallic "hairs" that once covered the creature.
But it does raise and interesting question. Why was Pryor willing to spend the money on the fiber tests (an expensive proposition in the early 1990's) but not on the skeletal remains, which still had tissue clinging to them?
Later, some would go on to note a resemblance in description to the Chupacabras, which would rise to international stardom only a few short years later in Puerto Rico.
Dayne Chastain, a self-proclaimed treasure hunter, was reported to have borrowed the skeleton from Pryor (whom he considered a friend) in order to carry it in a bucket of preservative alcohol to Roswell, NM. Chastain was certain he could broker a deal for someone to purchase the strange find.
UPDATE:
Mr. Pryor has contacted me (read comments) to inform me that the specimen has been examined by various scientists around the world. I have requested of him the DNA results from those. When these are made available, I will post that summary here.
He also wished to clarify that he did not pay for any DNA analysis on the purported hair samples. I can only assume then that the "The Charleston Express" was in error when they wrote on March 4, 1992: "Shortly after finding the bones, Pryor went back to the area and searched for anything else unusual and found several scraps of fibers in cattle tracks not too far away from where he found the bones. Although he couldn't be certain that the fibers had anything to do with the bones, he thought it was another strange happening and decided to have the fibers tested. He sent some of the fibers to Greg Fox, DNA scientist in Ventura County, California, and took some to Dr. Mary Whitmore, Professor in the department of zoology at the University of Okalahoma, and has just recently received results from their testing."

Andy has been helping Rick and Pete out, not only with background information, but also in building box-top models and designing the artwork. To date, Atlantis has issued three kits - two UFOs first issued by the small company Light Force, and the old Lindberg Flying Saucer.

At first, Strong and several other people on the pier thought the unexplained lights might be from helicopters or border patrol aircrafts. But Michael Milne, a public affairs officer with the Homeland Security in Seattle, said in an email that there were no border patrol aircrafts operating in the area that evening.
Representatives at White Rock City Hall and White Rock RCMP said they had not received any reports of UFO sightings in the area. The Coast Guard did not respond by press time.
Gavin McLeod, a member of the Mutual UFO Network, said he is often skeptical of reported UFO sightings. He said a sequence of lights is referred to by ufologists as "Chinese lanterns," a common phenomenon caused by such items as wedding balloons that are mistaken for UFOs.
"The fact that they were just floating there and then disappeared one at a time causes me to be somewhat suspicious," he said. "We get a lot of reports and most of them are misinterpretations. An actual, really good sighting is extremely rare."
Based on the description, McLeod said it's more likely that what Strong saw were hot air balloons that night. Strong did say the shade of orange resembled that of fire, but McLeod hasn't ruled out the possibility of it being a legitimate sighting.

Cahaya-cahaya misterius yang kerap muncul dan berterbangan seperti ini kerap disebut sebagai "Pulung Gantung" oleh Masyarakat Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta
Mitos pulung gantung di Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta sampai sekarang tetap ada. Pulung gantung dipercaya berbentuk seperti cahaya yang menakutkan dan selalu memakan korban manusia dan hewan piaraan warga di sekitar kaki Gunung Kidul. Ada yang mengkaitkan dengan sosok Banaspati? Apa sebenarnya mitos pulung gantung tersebut? Apakah cahaya aneh yang muncul itu sebenarnya adalah UFO?
Biasanya cahaya aneh itu muncul pada malam hari. Di mana cahaya itu muncul dan menghilang, dipercaya akan terjadi mala petaka berupa kematian atau tragedi lainnya. Misteri ini merebak kembali dengan wujud yang berbeda. Kali ini ratusan kambing milik masyarakat di kaki Gunung Kidul ditemukan tewas. Ulah siapakah ini?
Tabloid Posmo pernah mengulas mengenai hal ini dari sudut pandang paranormal. Memang ada pro dan kontra tentang keberadaan pulung kematian ini. Sebagian kaum muda dan modernis menolaknya. Selebihnya, terutama golongan sepuh, spiritualis, dan pengikut ajaran banyak yang mempercayai sebagai keadaan yang buruk. Dipercaya bahwa cahaya pulung yang muncul akan diikuti dengan peristiwa yang menyedihkan. Lalu bagaimana wujud sebenarnya pulung maut ini?
Tak banyak tokoh spiritual, budaya, apalagi masyarakat awam yang bisa menggambarkan dengan jelas wujud pulung itu. Hanya tradisi lisan yang turun-temurunlah yang menyebut, ia berupa cahaya. Seperti meteor yang jatuh ke bumi, berwarna merah menyala, terang menyilaukan.
Saat cahaya itu muncul dan tiba di sebuah tempat atau desa maka cahaya itu makin membesar dan jatuh menghilang. Cahaya pulung ini akan bisa dilihat dengan mata telanjang dari kejauhan.
Karena gampang dilihat inilah masyarakat sudah bisa menebak, di mana cahaya maut itu menghilang. Maka keesokan harinya merebak kabar buruk.
Pulung gantung di Gunung Kidul berwujud cahaya hijau kemerah-merahan. Cahaya itu biasanya meluncur dan jatuh meneror manusia.
Munculnya saat sekitar pukul 20.00 WIB, ketika umumnya anak-anak sudah tidur lelap. Cahaya ini dikatakan simbol kematian dan maut, diyakini pulung ini mentranformasikan diri sebagai pendorong tindakan nekat. Apakah ada semacam proses pengendalian pikiran (mind control) atau seperti yang terjadi di luar negeri, bahwa hal itu ada hubungannya dengan fenomena UFO?
Lebih jauh lagi, keanehan yang terjadi di kawasan Gunung Kidul ini ditambah lagi dengan matinya sejumlah ternak dengan cara yang aneh. Mulanya masyarakat Gunung Kidul menganggap petaka ini hanya kejadian biasa. Bahkan, ratusan kambing yang mati itu diduga akibat dimakan serigala hutan.
Namun, sekarang ini warga mulai curiga dan menyebut-nyebut adanya makhluk yang mereka anggap gaib dan disebut sebagai banaspati.
Menurut kepercayaan, makhluk itu bisa berwujud anjing-anjing liar atau banaspati muncul di malam hari dan sulit ditangkap karena bisa menghilang secepat kilat.
Peristiwa menyedihkan ini melanda Kelurahan Giri Mulyo, Giri Wungu, Giri Sekar, dan Kelurahan Giri Purwo Kecamatan Panggang. Sekitar Mei 2001, sedikitnya dilaporkan 200 ekor kambing telah jadi korban. Kambing-kambing ini lebih dulu diterkam, dihisap darahnya,dan diambil hatinya.
Umumnya makhluk itu mengincar darahnya saja. Tak hanya kambing, anak sapi juga menjadi incaran. Namun umumnya masih dapat diselamatkan. Biasanya kambing yang jadi korban akan habis tanpa sisa. Semua dibunuh dan dihisap darahnya sampai habis.
Kadang hanya disisakan kepala atau kakinya saja. Terlihat betapa liar dan hausnya makhluk misterius ini, hingga dikandang kambing itu tak ada ceceran darah setetes pun. Warga setempat menganggap ini benar-benar aneh.
Kalau kita mempelajari masalah UFO dan alien, maka mau tidak mau kita akan berpikir bahwa kasus ini mirip dengan Chupacabras atau mutilasi hewan (animal mutilation/cattle mutilations) yang juga dikaitkan dengan kehadiran UFO. Dari data-data yang ada, munculnya cahaya aneh di langit yang dianggap sebagai pulung, bisa dianggap hal itu merupakan pemunculan UFO. Secara umum, fenomena yang ada mempunyai kemiripan. Hanya saja, masyarakat kita menganggap hal ini berhubungan dengan makhluk gaib atau siluman. Sebagian menyebutnya sebagai siluman gandrong/gerandong.
Lalu benarkah anjing hutan yang menjadi biang keladi dari rentetan kejadian misterius ini? Kalangan spiritual dan tokoh-tokoh sepuh di Gunung Kidul menolaknya. Karena kalau hanya hewan biasa tentu tak akan bersifat musiman. Bisa setiap bulan. Karena sebagai tradisi masyarakat Gunung Kidul, punya kandang di tengah hutan dan pinggir pantai. Tentu saja, kalau ini ulah hewan liar pasti setiap saat akan menyerang kandang yang tak pernah dijaga itu.
Satu lagi fenomena pembunuhan ternak secara misterius dan tak wajar yang sempat menggegerkan kota Sleman, Yogyakarta beberapa waktu yang lalu.
Sleman, Tribun - Usai heboh gempa dan tsunami, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta digegerkan oleh kejadian aneh. Binatang buas yang belum diketahui jenisnya menyerang ternak milik warga di Dusun Sompilan, Tegaltirto, Berbah, Sleman, DI Yogyakarta, Sabtu (23/9).
Binatang buas itu membunuh delapan ekor kambing dan 14 ekor mentok dengan mengisap darahnya, tapi tidak memakan dagingnya. Pada leher ternak yang mati ditemukan dua lubang bekas gigitan taring binatang buas.
Serangan itu terjadi di kandang kelompok Lembu Manunggal di sebelah barat permukiman. Kandang di lembah Sungai Kucir itu digunakan warga untuk 35 ekor sapi, 29 ekor kambing, ayam, dan mentok.
Kambing yang menjadi korban milik Giman (3 ekor), Bayu Waskito (3 ekor), Sugeng (1 ekor), dan Toko (1 ekor). Ternak yang menjadi korban semuanya berada di luar kandang karena bangunan kandang ambruk diguncang gempa, 27 Mei lalu. Serangan ini baru diketahui warga pukul 05.00.
"Saat akan memberi makan sapi, saya melihat tiga ekor kambing saya rebah di tanah. Kemudian saya dekati dan ternyata kambing saya sudah mati. Pada leher kambing terdapat dua lubang bekas gigitan taring binatang. Yang membuat saya heran, kenapa tidak ada bekas tetesan darah dan kambing tidak dimakan," kata Giman, anggota Lembu Manunggal, Sabtu.
Giman mengatakan, serangan ini memupus rencananya untuk memperbaiki rumahnya yang roboh diguncang gempa. Seekor kambing dihargai Rp 300.000. Rencananya tiga ekor kambing itu dijual untuk membeli semen. "Saya sungguh buntung (rugi), karena tidak ada yang bisa dijual. Harapan saya tinggal seekor anak sapi," kata Giman lesu.
Di sekitar kambing yang mati, warga tidak menemukan bekas darah. Demikian juga 14 ekor ternak mentok milik Wagimin yang diisap darahnya. Warga juga menemukan bulu angsa berserakan di seberang Sungai Kucir, tetapi tidak ada bekas darah dan sisa-sisa daging yang dimakan.
Jejak yang ditemukan warga menunjukkan jejak kaki binatang berkuku tajam. Jejak itu seukuran telapak tangan orang dewasa dengan jari-jari merapat. Jejak itu tidak bisa menunjukkan arah datang dan perginya binatang buas itu. "Kejadian ini baru pertama terjadi di sini," kata Udi Wiharjo, Ketua Kelompok Lembu Manunggal.
Warga menduga binatang buas ini berasal dari Gunung Merapi yang mencari tempat aman saat terjadi erupsi. Dugaan ini kurang didukung fakta karena antara Dusun Sompilan dan Gunung Merapi berjarak 30 km. Kemungkinan kedua, binatang buas itu berasal dari perbukitan karst Gunung Sewu di sisi timur dusun.
