I was contemplating these issues when I received the annual EDGE question from the "intellectual impresario" John Brockman. Every year, Brockman sends to about two hundred thinkers a single question, and he posts all the answers on his website, edge.org. The question for 2015 was: "What Do You Think about Machines that Think?" (see: http://edge.org/annual-question/what-do-you-think-about-machines-that-think). Below is the answer I gave. I strongly recommend reading all the answers, since they are quite fascinating.
Nature has already created machines that think here on Earth-humans. Similarly, Nature could also create machines that think on extrasolar planets that are in the so-called Habitable Zone around their parent stars (the region that allows for the existence of liquid water on a rocky planet's surface).
The most recent observations of extrasolar planets have shown that a few tenths of all the stars in our Milky Way galaxy host roughly Earth-size planets in their habitable zones. Consequently, if life on exoplanets is not extremely uncommon, we could discover some form of extrasolar life within about 30 years. In fact, if life is ubiquitous, we could get lucky and discover life even within the next ten years, through a combination of observations by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS; to be launched in 2017) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST; to be launched in 2018).
However, one may argue, primitive life forms are not machines that "think". On Earth, it took about 3.5 billion years from the emergence of life to the appearance of Homo sapiens. Are the extrasolar planets old enough to have developed intelligent life? In principle, they definitely are. In the Milky Way, about half of the Sun-like stars are older than the Sun. Therefore, if the evolution of life on Earth is not entirely atypical, the Galaxy may already be teeming with places in which there are "machines" that are even more advanced than us, perhaps by as much as a few billion years!

Can we, and should we, try to find them?
I personally believe that we almost have no freedom to make those decisions. Human curiosity (Figure 1) has proven time and again to be an unstoppable drive, and those two endeavors will undoubtedly continue at full speed. Which one will get to its target first? To even attempt to address this question, we have to note that there is one important difference between the search for extraterrestrial intelligent civilizations and the development of AI machines.
Progress "towards" the "singularity" (AI matching or surpassing humans) will almost certainly take place, since the development of advanced AI has the promise of producing (at least at some point) enormous profits. On the other hand, the search for life requires funding at a level that usually can only be provided by large national space agencies, with no immediate prospects for profits in sight. This may give an advantage to the construction of thinking machines over the search for advanced civilizations. At the same time, however, there is a strong sense within the astronomical community that finding life of some form (or at least meaningfully constraining the probability of its existence) is definitely within reach.
Which of the two potential achievements (the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligent life or the development of human-matching thinking machines) will constitute a bigger "revolution"?
There is no doubt that thinking machines will have an immediate impact on our lives. Such may not be the case with the discovery of extrasolar life. However, the existence of an intelligent civilization on Earth remains humanity's last bastion for being "special. "We live, after all, in a Galaxy with billions of similar planets and an observable universe with hundreds of billions of similar galaxies. From a philosophical perspective, therefore, I believe that finding extrasolar intelligent life (or the demonstration that it is exceedingly rare) will rival the Copernican and Darwinian revolutions combined.

George Edwards, a Scottish skipper who spent decades searching for the beast said to inhabit Loch Ness, claims to have finally spotted his elusive quarry and gotten what he calls photographic proof of the monster.
On Nov. 2, 2011, Edwards photographed what appears to be a single hump in the water from the deck of his boat, Nessie Hunter. Edwards said that It was slowly moving up the loch towards Urquhart Castle and it was a dark grey color. It was quite a fair way from the boat, probably about half a mile away but it's difficult to tell in water, according to the Daily Mail, which has has posted Edwards photo. He watched the object for five to ten minutes before it slowly sank and did not resurface.
Edwards said he waited to release the photograph until after unnamed experts had examined it. Oddly, he is quoted in the Daily Mail as having had the photograph independently verified by a team of US military monster experts. In fact, the United States military does not have a team of monster experts that it dispatches to investigate huge, unknown creatures around the world. Nor, for that matter, is it clear what verifying his photo would mean other than suggesting it was likely a real (i.e., not digitally faked) image of something in the water - though what that something might be is, of course, the relevant question. The shape could theoretically be anything from a fish to a floating log to a lake monster.
Edwards' description of his sighting raises more questions than it answers. For example, if he had the object in sight for five to 10 minutes, why is there (apparently) only one photograph of it? That's enough time to capture dozens or hundreds of photographs. And though the unknown object seems large, there's no way to determine its size since we don't know the exact distance to the object (though he's quoted as saying it was a half-mile away), and there's nothing of scale nearby to help judge. Depending on how close it is to the camera, it could be 5 feet long or 50 feet long.
A watery clue to the mystery?
There are many unknowns, but if Edwards' account is accurate, it may provide an important clue as to the monster's identity. Other mysterious objects floating in lakes have been known to behave exactly as Edwards described - for example, the most famous sighting of Champ, the monster said to live in Vermont's Lake Champlain. That dark, humped creature was later revealed to almost certainly be a submerged tree trunk brought to the surface by buoyant gases created during decomposition. It rose to the surface, floated for about five to 10 minutes (during which time it looked exactly like a monstrous hump), then sank back down into the cold water never to be seen again. It is a well-established phenomenon that can - and has - created false lake monster sightings and photographs.
The floating log hypothesis also explains why these images are unusually good: Unlike an animal or wave that appears for mere seconds and creates blurry images, a log remains stationary for minutes, allowing for sharper, clearer photographs. Then they sink back down to the lake floor never to be seen again, having created a monstrous, mysterious best ever photograph.
The solution to one famous best ever lake monster sighting and photo does not necessarily solve another best ever sighting and photo, though Lake Champlain and Loch Ness have many similar characteristics (including wooded shorelines). The similarities are striking, and there's good reason to suspect the same natural hydrologic phenomenon was responsible for both monster photographs.
There is of course a strong economic incentive to promote monsters like Nessie: tourism. Loch Ness is the main tourist draw in the Scottish highlands, and Edwards makes his living guiding visitors who come from all over the world hoping for a glimpse of the famous monster. No one has suggested that Edwards faked the photo, but it's fair to point out that if an ambiguous shape is seen in the waters of Ness, the monster interpretation is far more likely to be accepted than a mundane explanation. If it's a fish or floating log, it's a non-story; if it's a possible best evidence of Nessie, it's international news.
The Loch Ness monster first jumped into international notoriety in the 1930s after a photo was widely published showing a serpentine head and neck. That image, taken by a London surgeon named Kenneth Wilson, was touted as the best evidence for Nessie - until it was admitted to be a hoax decades later.

It's UFO Sunday and today I've picked up a wonderful little project for Tunisian Crochet:I've been learning Tunisian Crochet from THIS CLASS ON CRAFTSY WITH JENNIFER HANSEN. In truth, this wasn't a UFO - or at least the first washcloth wasn't. I started the project and worked steadily through while following along with the classes. But then I still had a pretty big ball of yarn left over in the end, just enough for a second washcloth. Hmmm....I could just leave that ball of yarn alone, but after three days of sitting on my desk I decided that leaving it was as good as creating a new UFO, and I can't have that!So the second washcloth is in production and I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying tunisian crochet. It kind of a weird hybrid between knitting and crochet, both crafts I love, but for some reason this seems much faster.I plan to do more crochet and knitting this year, but always with one clear goal - no new UFOs. I've known how to crochet and knit since I was around 12 years old, but I hardly ever finished anything. In 2013 I really want to turn over a new leaf with these crafts and begin making beautiful, lightweight garments like THIS BUTTERFLY WRAP.I figure if I can stick with a quilt through more than a year of tedious hand stitching, I should be able to crochet a sweater in a few weeks!So that's what I'm working on this Sunday. Alien Abductions - Some Surprising Answers
There is much confusion surrounding the "abduction" cases of the
past several years. No one seems to have all the answers.
Something is happening here, there can be no doubt, but what
that something is seems to be beyond current science to
understand.
But then, there are many aspects of life known to the Masters of
the East and the metaphysicians of the West that are unknown to
present day science.
If we open up our minds to include these more advanced concepts,
and take into account what we do know of the space intelligences
visiting our planet at this time, perhaps we can find the truth
behind this most unsettling phenomenon.
First a little knowledge of who the space intelligences are and
why they are here. This is based on contacts made by Sir George
King with the space intelligences from our own solar system,
starting in 1954.
They are centuries more evolved than we are, both technologically
and spiritually. They inhabit bodies which are made up of finer
energy and live upon higher energy planes than ours and so cannot
be seen by our eyes unless they vibrate down to our frequency.
This is similar to the way most people cannot physically see
discarnate entities or ghosts.
These space intelligences have been helping us for many centuries.
They consider us to be their younger, less evolved brothers. They
are not allowed, at this time, to provide any more direct evidence
of their existence for karmic reasons. In short, we must sort out
our own problems as much as possible before we will be openly
visited. In this way we will learn greatly through experience.
The following is a quote from the Master Aetherius, one of the
primary contacts of Sir George, given back in the early 1960's
"A certain amount of literature has been written about us and it
has been noted that through this literature runs a streak of
fear, which has been put in by the writers, in order to make it
more sensational. Disregard this, so far as we are concerned! We
are Beings more evolved than yourselves. We have indeed outgrown
your Earth and have gone onto a higher plane of material existence, so you can see that, should we do you any harm, we would be
guilty of a grievous crime."
Until the late 1960s, alien races outside our solar system were
not even allowed by the space intelligences of this solar system
to visit Earth. This ban has since been lifted, although they
continue to monitor alien visitations very closely. The Master

From these messages we can learn several things. We are indeed
being visited by strange aliens, which confirms many of the
strange contacts that have been published, and more importantly,
these visitations are being closely monitored by very advanced
extraterrestrials, who consider it their duty to help us and
protect us.
Therefore we can safely conclude that there is no alien race
performing mass abductions for some kind of genetic experiment.
However, the question remains, what is going on then? Many solid
people are reporting similar experiences, often with quite severe
and negative side effects.
We believe that the bulk of abduction cases are being perpetrated
by discarnate beings from Earth, operating in astral bodies. In
fact they are not abducting the physical bodies of these individuals but their astral counterpart during the sleep state.
This may seem to be a strange concept for some, so let's examine
it further.
First, how can this happen?
When we sleep, a part of our consciousness is projected in our
astral body to other places. Sometimes this is on the physical
plane, other times it is on the astral planes. The astral planes
are places around Earth where people go when they die, some
pleasant others not so pleasant. These planes are made up of
similar things as on the physical, i.e. mountains, water, houses,
cities, friends, cars etc. Sometimes our dreams are an attempt to
communicate to the conscious mind what our astral body is
experiencing during a projected state. There is much information
on these realms gathered by people, such as Robert Monroe, who
practice projection and try to retain as much awareness during
this state as possible.
When one is in a projected state, one is visiting a realm where
others normally live and are well established. It is not too
difficult for a powerful astral entity to appear to you as the
alien form refered to as a Gray, for example. They can also
physically affect the astral body during this state. The
resultant atmosphere of fear and whatever else they did to the
astral body will reflect back to the physical body once the two
are united again upon awakening.
It is hard to be specific in describing how these things occur
because the astral plane is so foreign to our understanding of
physical science. The discovery of the other realms and the finer
energies will probably be the next major breakthrough in science.
The next question is, why would people on the other realms
perform abductions?
This is a far more difficult question to answer.
Let us start by looking at the results of these auric abductions.
Firstly, they spread a false impression of what the space
intelligences are doing here, implying they are unfriendly and
should be feared.
Secondly, they can create tremendous fear and confusion both on
the part of those abducted, and on the part of many who follow
such reports and are intimately involved.
The real reason is probably a combination of these, and perhaps
others not yet discovered.
The more fear and confusion they create, the more energy the
astral entities can accumulate for themselves. This is very
important to them, for they can control others on those realms
and the physical realm with such power. Just as satanic groups
gain energy and power through fear and ritual, astral entities
can do the same, only it is easier to do this from the astral
realms.
What could be gained through confusing the truth about the space
intelligences? The very real energy of fear is again the key.
The more knowledgeable and enlightened people become, the more
difficult it becomes to scare and confuse them. Imagine the
difference in people's thoughts if they believed extraterrestrials
were not only friendly but their Spiritual elder brothers. Rather
than fear, people would feel love and reverence. Multiply that
difference on a global scale and you have compelling reason for
the promiscuous astral entities to do their utmost to spread
confusion in this way.
Please understand that the above explanation is for the mass of
abduction cases, a general rule. There are undoubtedly exceptions.
Some people may have actually been picked up by an alien craft
for certain reasons, but the result would in most cases be a
positive one and helpful to the individual.
Nobody has all the answers to these questions, but I hope I have
helped to clear some of the mystery surrounding the rash of
abduction cases being reported.

1.We are being protected from forces outside of Earth by an
advanced and spiritual race of extraterrestrials in our solar
system 2.There is not and would not be allowed any type of mass
abduction campaign by an evil alien race. 3.The majority of
reported and unreported abduction cases are perpetrated by
astral entities and involve the abduction of people's etheric
body during the sleep state, for a short period of time.
