Members of the UFO community have been claiming, since the events of 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico, that the US Government and other governments of the world (yes, including Canada) have been suppressing information that would prove the existence of extraterrestrials and alien contact with certain members of government.
This week, the UFO community suffered a staggering blow to the claims of UFO Cover-up/Conspiracies, and I hope a well needed "wake-up" call when the The Disclosure Petition II - The Rockefeller Petition put forth by Stephen Bassett did not achieve the necessary signatures to require a response from the White House and was removed from "We the People" on March 25, 2012.
The Disclosure Petition II was posted on the White House website for sixty days (including the first submission on December 1, 2011) and drew minor media attention from accredited journalists, radio/TV, but mostly from internet bloggers and UFO enthusiasts.
The fact of the matter is that 25,000 signatures were needed to keep the petition alive.
Stephen Bassett, who was on The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show, February 15 2012 said that the petition signing was not just limited to the citizens of the US but open to the world.
I quickly pointed out to Bassett that according to the US Census of July 2011, the population of the United States was 311,591,917 and a worldwide population count of 6,840,507,003 (2010) and that if the total number of 25,000 signatures were the magic number, and with all the people worldwide that UFO enthusiasts claim that there are, the number of 25,000 should be a very easy number to reach - if in fact the UFO phenomena was real - and not the claims of a few.
As I predicted, the Disclosure Petition II - The Rockefeller Initiative failed to get the necessary 25,000 votes with a worldwide final count of 6,937 (18,063 short.)
It is apparent that the people of the world have spoken out loud and clear that the UFO phenomena is a dying issue as evidenced by the sad showing of signatures on the Disclose Petition II.
Here are the facts:
- There are 311,591,917 people in the United States (US Census July 2011);
- There are 6,840,507,003 people worldwide (Including the US 0 2010);
- 25,000 signatures were need to keep the petition alive;
- 0nly 6,937 signatures were collected worldwide;
- therefore - 0.000001014106118 of the world population signed the Disclosure Petition II - The Rockefeller Initiative.
The excuses for the very poor response to the Disclosure Petition II - The Rockefeller Initiative and the removal of the petition from the Government website, "We the People" were quick to come from Stephen Bassett and the Paradigm Research Group:
- the 25,000 signature threshold, increased from 5,000.
- decrease in the public engagement of "We the People" after the threshold increase to 25,000. During the first sixty days after "We the People" was launched on September 22, 2011, between 15,000 and 20,000 petitions were submitted. During the past sixty days petition submissions were a small fraction of that number. The result has been far less traffic to the site and fewer crossover signatures. At this time only sixty petitions are active and many of those are early submissions waiting on a response.

- petition fatigue. The "We the People" project is now five months old and many are a bit weary of being prompted to sign petitions.

In an email to Bassett earlier this evening, I said, "It would seem that the world wide interest is based on the 'disinformation' being spread by the UFO community itself. In my opinion - it is not the government who is suppressing the information on UFOs but the UFO community who is claiming that the government is suppressing the information as a ploy not to have to provide evidence for their vague and un substantiated UFO claims."
Bassett has yet to reply.
In a move to try and keep the UFO / government conspiracy momentum going and to keep stirring the political pot, Bassett has not launched a new petition, Disclosure Petition III - Nuclear Weapons Tampering.
The new Disclosure Petition III - Nuclear Weapons Tampering - is calling attention to extraordinary claims and allegations from former ranking members of the United States Air Force. It is part of the White House's "We the People" project.
On September 27, 2010 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC a press conference was held in which testimony regarding incidents of weapons tampering by unidentified craft was presented to the media. Those former members of the USAF who were present, making the extraordinary claims and allegations include self-proclaimed witnesses were all former U. S. Air Force personnel and included Lt. Col. Dwynne Arneson, Capt. Bruce Fenstermacher, Col. Charles Halt, Capt. Robert Jamison, Patrick McDonough, 1st Lt. Jerome Nelson, and Capt. Robert Salas. According to PRG's recent press release, most of these witnesses have held high security clearance.
This is the second time that these people have tried to get more than their 5 minutes of fame and glory, which again failed miserably.
Once again, let's look at the numbers and see why people are not taking these claims seriously:

Another story that we broke on The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show was when one of the most respected Roswell / UFO researchers and authors stated that new evidence has come forth which might prove that the Roswell, New Mexico event of 1947 was NOT a crashed UFO!
According to Dr Kevin Randle (Major in the National Guard Reserve), a group of Roswell UFO/Crash investigators, researchers and authors are taking a hard look at this new evidence and will be revealing their finding in the near future.
What will happen if after all these years and all of the claims that have been made by authors, researcher, investigators and even the new claims of government conspiracies and cover-ups when it comes to aliens and UFOs?
Undoubtedly, there will be a great number of people who will be back paddling and they will find a new reason why not to trust the word of these highly respected who are honest enough to come forth with their findings.

Snippy, a horse that died mysteriously in an Alamosa field in 1967, is back in the news thanks to eBay. The Appaloosa mare's death drew international media attention when her owner, Nellie Lewis, said the 3-year-old was mutilated by space aliens. There were no tracks or blood on the ground, but the skin and flesh from the withers to the head were removed, exposing the bone. Lewis told the world media there was a strange, sweet odor that she likened to incense on the rural ranch in the area where Snippy's remains were found. The stories grew - the heart and brain were missing, too - and Snippy became the first reported case of animal mutilation by visitors from space.
Snippy, or Snippy's skeleton, dropped out of sight for decades, only to surface last week on eBay with a minimum bid of 50,000. "Whether it was a UFO or aliens or not, it is history," said Frank Duran, a marketing specialist for Dell's Insurance in Alamosa. Duran said he posted Snippy on eBay after an attorney for a local man's estate asked him to market the famed set of bones. But Monday, Duran put the Snippy bidding on hold because the local chamber of commerce and a relative of Lewis' have claimed ownership.
"When I was a kid, I remember that Snippy was displayed at the chamber of commerce," said Duran, who created the www.snippy.com Web site to market the mare. "At some point, the chamber was going to throw her away, and a guy, Herman Doty, took her with the dream of opening a museum," he said. "It didn't happen."
In the mid-1970s, the Lewis family donated Snippy to the Luther Bean Museum at Adams State College, where she was displayed until the 1980s, Duran said. From there, Snippy moved to the home of Carl Helfin, a local collector. Helfin died in 2003, and the much heralded horse skeleton was part of the estate, Duran said. With Snippy's legal ownership undetermined, Duran said he would like to see her displayed at the San Luis Valley Museum. "We could try to raise some money," he said. Dr. Wallace Leary, an Alamosa veterinarian, reconstructed Snippy's skeleton in 1968 and debunked the space aliens theory by finding two bullet holes in the horse. "The shots came from a.22-caliber and were in the left pelvic bone and the right thigh bone," Duran said. "That probably wouldn't have killed her."
Wildlife experts have said that coyotes frequently leave surgical-style cuts in carcasses, but Snippy's space-alien legend grew, fed by Lewis' stories. Lewis said the marks on the ground around Snippy included six indentations that formed a circle 3 feet in diameter, the sort of imprint a UFO might leave, according to news accounts. Lewis said she picked up a piece of the horse's mane and it burned her hands. Later, the boots she was wearing were found to be radioactive, she said.
Two years after Snippy's death, area residents said no grass would grow on the site where the carcass was found. Over the years, the San Luis Valley has became a mecca for people who wanted to see flying saucers. Hundreds of sightings have been reported to the county sheriff's office. The trend started with Snippy. "People are starting to be a lot more open to UFOs and aliens," Duran said. "People are starting to say maybe it did happen."
"Alamosa is in the fertile San Luis Valley. I didn't know then that the San Luis Valley would become very important to me in the future. (I later bought some acreage in the valley.) Alamosa is known in UFOlogy for the Harry King Ranch. It was on Harry King's ranch that "Snippy" the horse was mutilated. This was the first mutilation to be made public. We decided to visit Harry's ranch. Harry was then about 80 years old.
As you travel out toward the Great Sand Dunes National Monument you will see Mt. Blanca on the east side of the highway. Many unusual events have taken place on that mountain. If you keep watching you will see a little sign on a fence on the west side of the highway that says King Ranch. As you drive down a little desert road you will see Australian Jack Rabbits hopping all over. Harry imported those jack rabbits a long time ago. They are huge. Twice as big as a Washington Jack Rabbit. They have long black legs and black tails.
I understand another animal that was imported to the San Luis Valley for sport is the Jaguar. In fact is is becoming quite prolific.
When you arrive at the gate to the King Ranch you see signs saying "Stay out, this means you," etc. We started honking the horn. Harry finally came out and walked up to the gate. We explained who we were so he asked us to come in. Seems we have a mutual friend from the Seattle area!
The next several hours were some of the most interesting I have spent before or since. Harry told us that Snippy was not his horse but had been pastured there, it belonged to his sister. In the evening they had fed Snippy and he was just fine. In the morning when they went to the corral Snippy was dead.
For those who are not familiar with this case, you could not imagine the sight that awaited Harry and his sister. Snippy's head was completely stripped from the neck up. After the story became known, UFO investigators came from everywhere to interview Harry. One that lived in New Mexico, and later moved to Seattle, came to visit Harry. Only this one came purportedly in a small UFO (this came straight out of Harry's mouth!) with little landing wheels on the bottom. I never did make the connection between the man I knew in Seattle, and this person, unless Harry had the name of the person mixed up. He said that this person landed in the yard and told him he was going to give him a ride one of these days. Harry said that these little craft were seen quite often on Mt. Blanca and over the highway in front of the ranch. He had watched what looked like headlights from cars go up and down Mt. Blanca at night, as well as black helicopters coming out of the valleys. While we were there we saw four of the black helicopters coming from behind the mountain. We wondered what they could have been doing in such a desolate place.
An investigation has been done on the Mt. Blanca phenomenon. Dr. R. Leo Sprinkle wrote a paper on unsual events that took place in the vicinity. I carried it in the Missing Link in 1982 and 1983 under the name, "Rocky Mountain Ranch." (It is also on this blog.) Dr. Sprinkle was in attendance when some of the things took place. This phenomena included everything from aliens to UFOs to Sasquatch.
More than his interest in the Snippy story, Harry wanted to tell us what was even more spectacular to him. That story is about Adolph Hitler!
Four days before the war ended in Germany Harry said that he ran smack dab right into Adolph Hitler coming out of the bank in Alamosa. Not too many persons knew that Hitler owned a big horse ranch in the Denver area before the war. They also didn't know that Hitler's cousin was the banker in Alamosa. Harry had gone into town to go to the bank. The college kids were out in the street yelling, "Hitler, Hitler." He went around the corner to approach the bank door and ran straight into him. He swore it happened. He said he looked exactly like him. Harry said there was a lot of theorizing that Hitler had parachuted into the valley to pick up his money and go to South America. Since then I have paid attention to the stories about Hitler being seen in South America since the war. I still wonder....

MARTIN BRIDGSTOCK. BEYOND BELIEF: SKEPTICISM, SCIENCE AND BELIEF IN THE PARANORMAL. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 2009.
This book by an Australian academic and member of the Australian skeptics movement, is not particularly concerned with refuting specific paranormal claims, but with a more general defence of skepticism as a mode of thought. It includes a brief history of skeptical thought from the Greeks onward, including a detailed examination of Hume's position on miracles, an examination of the scientific method, and its contrasting with various protoscientific, cryptoscientific and pseudo scientific claims.
He next examines the nature of paranormal claims and makes the interesting point that if any of these claims could be verified and subject to real scientific study, by many definitions of paranormal, they would be immediately cease to be paranormal and become part of normal science. He might have gone on to argue that if scientists then used these new findings or principles to explain further tranches of anomalous phenomena, they would be accused of 'explaining away' by paranormalists.
There is a useful discussion of the various ways in which paranormal claims can be based on false premises, errors of perception and memory and so on, and notes how advocacy groups such as the creation science movement can manipulate evidence and misquote sources (sadly some skeptics are not beyond this either).
He follows sociologist Erich Goode in classifying proponents of paranormal and other anomalous claims into several categories, these range from protoscientists (or wannabe scientists) such as academic parapsychologists who at least try to use the language and protocols of science in their work, through pseudoscientists, practitioners such as alternate medicine practitioners, religious groups such as creation scientists, grass-roots movements such as ufology, through to the socially isolated crank. Of course, it must be said, in the real world things are never as clear cut as that, for example many cranks are not socially isolated, they are able to gather followers or create communities, and much of the motivation behind parapsychology lies in a quasi-religious concern for the preservation or restoration of a transcendentalist and anti-materialist world view, combating what one might call secular modernism.
Critics will point out that at least some of these trends appear in the organised skeptics movement itself, groups such CSI(COP) and its offshoots do not actually conduct any critical scientific studies of paranormal or other anomalous claims. Bridgstock accepts that they fall into the category of grass-roots social organisations, but if you look at the associations of the initials CSI COP (ie police) or CSI (officially standing for Committee for Scientific Investigation but the association of those initials with Crime Scene is total in the popular imagination and their use deliberate).
This shows that the role that the organised skeptics movement sees for itself is not a scientific or even primarily educational one, but as a policing one. They are what sociologists call 'moral crusaders' or 'vigilante movements'. These are groups which organise to protest, witness and campaign against social ills real or imaginary. Though these terms are often used just as terms of abuse, the ills against which they campaign are often real, and their causes by no means absurd. However they do have a tendency towards an increasingly radical Manichian world view, seeing themselves as the children of righteousness and light battling the forces of cosmic darkness.
Many of these organisations have arisen from an evangelical religious background, and often they can be seen as defending the fundamental structures of society against the forces of antinomian chaos, defending habitat against wilderness. CSI(COP), though many of its members are ostensibly atheists or humanists, has many features of religiosity: a sense of evangelical mission, of proclaiming a saving message, of tales of conversion and even the idea that just reading a sacred text can produce a metatonia which will transform your life.
Furthermore the ills against which the moral crusaders campaign are often metaphors for deeper changes in society, and for the campaigners perceived loss of status. Psychical research arose in England partly as a defensive move among sections of the classicist 'elite against the 'materialism' associated with the new forms of industry and social organisation. Creation science and intelligent design organise against the mid/late twentieth century rise in secularism. As science and secularism moved from being outsider forces in society into the mainstream, they too became elates which looked out to protect their roles. CSICOP emerges in response not to Joseph Rhine's psychical research but in response to the youth antinomianism of the 1964-72 period.
If CSI(COP) and its fellows are moral crusaders, against what might they best crusade? The obvious examples are those elements of paranormalism/fringeism which are primarily after wallets and credit cards, and which feed on the lonely, gullible, bereaved and desperate. The sort of people who sell worthless mine-detection devices to third world countries for example, and who offer worthless, pain free alternative cures for cancer to parents who cannot bear the sickness and distress that chemotherapy causes their toddlers, or those who promote a narrow sectarian and completely false worldview and at worst pathological hatreds.
In other areas actual scientific enquiry, such as the replication attempts by Marks and Kammann on Targ and Puthoff's remote viewing experiments would seem to be a good way forward. The real sceptical viewpoint lies in attempts at impartial investigation, rather than the battle between often uncritical promotion of paranormal claims by believers, and the often equally uncritical debunking of them by skeptics.
