Sampai sejauh ini ada beberapa istilah untuk menyebut benda terbang yang tidak dikenal (tidak teridentifikasi), pertama adalah FLYING SAUCER atau diterjemahkan sebagai piring terbang. Penggunaan istilah ini populer sejak tahun 1947, terutama ketika media massa di Amerika meliput pengalaman pilot Kenneth Arnold.
Namun menggunaan kata piring (saucer) sudah pernah ada pada tahun 1878, ketika seorang petani Texas bernama John Martin melihat benda aneh. Sebenarnya John Martin tidak mengatakan bahwa bentuknya benda terbang aneh yang dilihatnya itu seperti piring, namun mengatakan bahwa besarnya terlihat seperti sebesar piring.
Sama halnya dengan Kenneth Arnold, juga tidak mengatakan bahwa bentuk benda terbang misterius itu seperti piring, bahkan dia menyebutnya lebih seperti bulan sabit, namun gerakannya seperti piring dilemparkan di atas air. Anehnya, kemudian, banyak foto-foto beredar yang memperlihatkan benda terbang misterius berbentuk piring terbang.

Pada tahun 1952, Kapten Edward J. Ruppelt, direktur pertama dari Project Blue Book, memperkenalkan istilah UFO yang merupakan singkatan dari Unidentified Flying Objects (pada waktu itu pihak militer amerika, khususnya USAF, menyingkatnya dengan UFOB).
Sebelumnya, pada perang dunia kedua, benda terbang misterius ini sering disebut dengan istilah Foo Fighter, obyek berkilauan yg banyak terbang di angkasa. Disebut sebagai foo fighter karena sering dianggap sebagai foo atau foe (lawan) sebab benda terbang aneh itu bukan berasal dari armada kawan (walaupun tidak pernah mengganggu atau menyerang).
Belakangan, ada yang menyebut benda terbang misterius ini dengan istilah UAP atau "UNIDENTIFIED AERIAL PHENOMENA", atau ada yang menyebutnya "Unusual Aerial Phenomena." Istilah UAP ini diperkenalkan oleh J. Allen Hynek. Di kalangan pilot atau pekerja bandara, mereka lebih sering menggunakan istilah UAP. Pihak yang skeptik juga lebih suka menggunakan istilah UAP daripada UFO. Namun di media massa, istilah UFO lebih sering digunakan walau nampaknya ada upaya untuk mempopulerkan istilah UAP.
Di perancis dan spanyol atau negara-negara amerika latin, istilah yang digunakan adalah OVNI. Kalau menurut bahasa spanyol, OVNI merupakan singkatan dari "Objeto Volador No Identificado", sementara bahasa perancisnya berarti "Objet volant non identifi'e."
BAGAIMANA DENGAN INDONESIA?
Di Indonesia memang populer dengan istilah piring terbang. Istilah UFO juga secara umum dimengerti oleh kebanyakan orang. Namun pada tahun 70-80an, pernah ada istilah BETA yang merupakan singkatan dari Benda Terbang Aneh. Istilah ini diperkenalkan oleh Marsekal Muda TNI (Purn) J. Salatun. Kemudian ada juga istilah BETEBEDI yang merupakan akronim dari Benda Terbang Belum Dikenal. Mengapa dipergunakan istilah BELUM dan bukannya TIDAK? Di sekitar tahun 80-an pernah terbit beberapa edisi majalah dengan nama BETEBEDI. Alasan menggunakan kata "belum" adalah kalau menggunakan kata "tidak" maka selamanya akan tidak dikenal. Tapi kalau menggunakan kata "belum", maka ada harapan akan terkuak dan suatu saat dikenal.
Istilah BETEBEDI maupun BETA tidak populer di kalangan orang Indonesia. Seorang menulis di Wikipedia namun yang tertulis adalah Beterbedi (dengan huruf "r") dan tulisan ini dikutip di beberapa situs internet. Di Wikipedia disebutkan bahwa Beterbedi (Benda Terbang Belum Dikenal), merupakan istilah yang diperkenalkan oleh J.Salatun. Tapi ini tidak benar. Menurut saya, yang memperkenalkan istilah BETEBEDI adalah C.M. Tanadi, seorang yang berprofesi sebagai akuntan publik yang tinggal di Bandung. Beliau adalah pengamat UFO juga di tahun 80-an dan banyak menerbitkan buku-buku UFO (dengan nama Yayasan Tanadi dengan alamat waktu itu di Ciwulan No 32 Bandung.
Istilah BETA sendiri, nampaknya oleh J. SALATUN tidak dipopulerkan dan hanya muncul di bukunya yang terbit di tahun 1960. Sementara buku keduanya yang terbit pada tahun 1982, menggunakan istilah UFO. Kalau tidak karena milis BETA-UFO, barangkali istilah BETA ini sudah tidak pernah dipakai lagi. Bahkan banyak yang belum tahu bahwa kata BETA di BETA-UFO itu merupakan singkatan dari Benda Terbang Aneh.
Yang menarik adalah, mengapa kita tidak punya sebuah nama khusus untuk menyebut benda terbang misterius ini. Sejauh ini yang dianggap sebagai nama adalah "piring terbang", sementara lainnya adalah nama yang merupakan singkatan. Menarik juga bahwa aliens disebut sebagai EBE (lagi-lagi singkatan) yang merupakan singkatan dari Extraterrestrial Biological Entity. Atau bahkan ALF yang merupakan kependekan dari Alien Life Form, atau ELF ("Extraterrestrial Life Form").
Di Indonesia sendiri, bagaimana kita melafalkan UFO? Apakah dengan Yuo Ef Ow atau yufo atau ufo?
Atau kita mau mempopulerkan istilah baru yang merupakan terjemahan dari UAP? Misalnya kalau diterjemahkan sebagai Fenomena Angkasa Tidak Umum, maka bisa-bisa disingkat sebagai FATU)

In part, its because of your response. I'm tired of seeing these shows and doing nothing. Maybe its time for all of us to stand up. This type of "bubble gum" journalism is permeating everything facet of our society. Our parents believed in the news. Walter Cronkite was, at one point, the most trusted man in America! Now, what do we have, who can we trust. NO ONE. The news organizations learned their lesson, during the Vietnam War, when the truth was transmitted directly into the homes of the American people. That's when everyone learned not to tell the whole truth, about anything, to the American people. Anyway, here's what I thought, about "Seeing is Believing". To whom it may concern, Allow me to start by saying thank you, for your apparent willingness, to a least discuss the topic of UFOs. However, is it possible, to have an informed, through discussion, of the topic. One which includes all the facts. If Woodward and Bernstein conducted their investigation, of the Watergate scandal, with the same attention to detail, as all modern day journalist's, Nixon would be remembered as one of our most respected Presidents. ABC News interviewed, and didn't use, over 100 interviewees, some of which were among the worlds most informed scientists, on the topic of UFOS. Stanton Friedman, and Dr. John Mack claimed to have been interviewed for over an hour, only to have a few seconds used. Regarding Roswell, ABC News editors decided not to air an extended interview with, COLONEL Dr. Jesse Marcel, who allegedly handled the wreckage. I've never seen professional Skeptics on any other documentaries', or show's. A Pennsylvania witness at Bensalem reported watching a "pulsating, blinking UFO whose undercarriage revealed it to be a triangle," according to testimony in Case 64490 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was driving home from New Jersey with his 20-month-old son in the vehicle and first saw the object along Galloway Road just after turning off of Byberry Street about 7:30 p.m. on March 14, 2015.
"I saw a pulsating, blinking object from the west which appeared stationary from where we were," the witness stated. "Since we live in an area with three airports (Phili, West Trenton and another small prop job airport whose name I am blanking on) I initially assumed it was an aircraft."

The witness is ruling out known objects from the local airports.
"Several things dispelled this view. 1. It started to descend whereas a plane from any of the three airports would be ascending in this direction (west to east). 2. It seemed, even from a distance, to be a huge aircraft larger than any of the smaller jets and planes flying in and out of West Trenton and the small prop job airport. 3. No other planes were sighted in this particular area at the time I continued to observe the object as I stopped at the red light at Galloway."
The witness said the object remained stationary for about half a minute before moving in a downward descent east."
The witness continued driving and watching the object.
"As the light turned green I continued to look at it as I drove and the object descended so low that I could make out three things in the course of about 10 seconds. 1. A light shining underneath it. 2. Fan-like indentations. 3. A window-like hole in the middle of the object."
The witness also noticed the shape of the object.
"The object was definitely triangular in shape. I kept looking for wings, such as an airplane would have, that I never found."
The witness quickly became fearful that he was looking at a UFO.
"The object continued to descend east until I lost sight of it among the buildings on Hulmeville Road (which intersects Galloway). I must admit before I end my report that I am avidly interested in UFOs and ufology and have been since I was a teenager. I even watched MUFON's special on the History Channel. I am always looking up to the stars to see if there is any unusual activity and for the past 25 or so years I have never witnessed any. This is the only time when I have seen an object that I could not identify as aircraft of some kind. Had my son not been in the car with me (whose safety is my first priority) I would have attempted to follow the craft further. After several weeks I am still in awe about the incident."

1958, what a year!
SAUCER UFO CAUGHT ON TAPE IN BRAZIL? Even when it's stabilized, the video is really shaky. I've never seen a video this shaky before, so naturally I said 'this is the perfect video to talk about', and we're going to do just that. So today we're Minas, Brazil to look at this shaky video which was shot on August 26th, 2012. The video shows a saucer shaped object slowly floating through the sky. Witnesses can be heard talking about the strange object. Once the video ends, it goes into a stabilized version and we get a better shot of the UFO. I'm having such a hard time figuring out what this object is. It doesn't look real, but I can't decide if this some kind of bad after effect, or if it's something like a balloon. My gut is telling me it's some kind of bad after effect because the UFO appears to 'move' with the camera's jiggling. That could be due to the camera's picture quality, but I'm almost positive it's because this UFO was added into the video after it was shot. Another reason why I think it's fake is because in the description of the video, it says that everyone who saw the UFO was scared after shooting the video. Yet, during the video, it sounds like people are laughing. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but I think it sounds like laughter. So overall, I believe the video to be a fake, but what do you think? Did these people really capture a UFO flying overhead, or is this just another bad fake UFO video?

T. the Extra-Terrestrial," Hawking portends a scenario that is more on the order of "Independence Day". As he says elsewhere in this "Times" article: "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach."Sort of gives you those warm fuzzies all over, don't it? But, until such time as we actually experience (if ever) that first contact with an alien life form, we can only use the tools available to us to extrapolate (or, best case, guess) as to what that encounter may be like.Which brings me to the fifteen stories -- from seventeen authors -- included in my forthcoming anthology "Is Anybody Out There?" [End shameless self-promotion.]In 1950, Enrico Fermi postulated a contradiction (aka paradox): If there are uncountable galaxies within our universe, each containing uncountable planets, and some percentage of those planets are habitable (by our human definition of "habitable"), then why is there no evidence -- "at least none that we have found and understood so far" -- of alien civilizations? And it is those eleven words that I have set off by em-dashes and placed in italics that are the key to this paradox. The evidence may be out there, but our scientists and researchers simply do not understand it1. The stories in this anthology attempt to answer the Fermi Paradox. The two most frequent solutions to the Paradox suggested here, by the way, is that the universe is actually a whole lot smaller than we think that it is or (one I lean toward myself) that we're surrounded and bombarded by communications from alien civilizations all the time, but just don't know how to recognize them.

It's been a great year for UFO sightings. Since the beginning of 2004, I must have checked out 5 or 6 major UFOs spotted around the world in countries like Mexico, India, and even in Iran! The Iranian sighting was compelling because the man was able to record it on video. There have also been major sightings in the USA.
The reports that most concern me at the end of this amazing year are the Indian sightings where some of the Indians, reporting for UFO magazines, are claiming that first contact with aliens is imminent. It's been reported by Indian correspondents that some kind of structure is being built in the Himalaya Mountains by the aliens and, we assume, for the aliens. The Indian correspondents have rumored that the aliens are from Sirius and that they intend to reveal themselves to six countries in the world by 2012.
It's an amazing revelation. Not because I think there's any truth to it, but because Ufology is rife with stories just like this:
aliens encounter humans
aliens claim they are from planet x
aliens predict the future
predictions rarely materialize
The problem is the alien predictions almost never come true and there will likely *never* be anyway to validate whether any alien is from any planet anywhere in the universe. In other words, some aliens lie.
Another problem that concerns me is that some aliens are also dangerous. Whether they mean to hurt humans and animals or not, it is completely illogical to assume that any UFO or alien is harmless. Quite the opposite. Again, there are numerous reports in UFO literature that clearly show harm to humans whether it is because of radiation burns or something even more sinister.
The point I would like to make is this: Use caution in exploring or investigating UFOs. These things are "unknowns" in the deepest meaning of that word. It behooves all investigators, professional or amateur, to treat these unknowns with great caution. It is not worth your life to be too hasty. Use an intelligent, rational approach in your investigation.
The longer you live to investigate UFOs, the more time you will have to understand them.

UFO SIGHTING IN BARDSTOWN, KENTUCKY ON NOVEMBER 19TH 2013 - UNKNOWN OBJECT IN SKY. 11/19/13
while driving home, noticed a strange flashing object in the clear, dark sky in front of me. this was as bright as a camera flash, extremely bright. it was flickering and seemed to bounce up and down, definitely not a normal flight path of anything I have ever seen. it seemed to be very small in size. after observing I thought it might have been a rocket, but it was going horizontal not vertical, also the light was not yellow or orange in color, as you would think any rocket would emit. this was white. I am convinced this is a genuine UFO, I have never witnessed anything like this before today. if anyone else knows anything about this, please post it.

LOCATION OF EVENT: near Fort Collins, Colorado
"I was driving from Mulberry and Lemay in Fort Collins to the Waterglen housing development off of I-25. The sky was very cloudy, and I was looking in my rear view mirror at the clouds above the mountains behind me. Some of the clouds were dark, and some were bright white. When I turned left into the neighborhood, I had a view of the western sky. That is when I noticed 3 white objects in the sky.
They were closer than an airplane and well below the clouds. Then they seemed to flip end over end in formation, and turn black with a bright white edge or outline. They were distinctly separate, but in near perfect formation. My daughter said they were birds because of flight formation.
My son thought it was a military air show. I was thinking, "What the heck is that, maybe hang gliders?"
But they were moving from South to North across the western sky at the same altitude and not getting lower. They seemed to be flipping end over end changing from bright reflective white against the dark clouds to the outlined black. The shape of each individual object was kind of boomerang, but they were all 3 together in the shape of a triangle. They moved rather slowly, and we watched them until I pulled into my driveway.
The neighbor was walking out of his house, so I stopped him and asked "What the heck is that in the sky?" It took him about 10 seconds to locate what we were seeing. He had no idea what it could be either. We laughed about it being UFOs. We watched this for about 5 minutes until they disappeared behind the houses into the northwestern sky. They never got closer or higher.
They just seemed to vanish. Immediately I went inside and posted this on my Facebook page. I wanted to document what I saw. Then I started to look on the Internet for sightings in Fort Collins.
A couple of them matched my description, but on different dates. I am left wondering, "What the heck was that?"
Maybe if this happens another day, someone else will have reported it, and I wont feel crazy anymore."

It has a long shingle beach that runs right along the town. My friend Chris Black used to live in Worthing. When he found out I now investigate UFOs he informed me of a very interesting sighting he had back in 2003.Sighting DetailsBack in November 2003, Chris was 18 years old. One night he was sitting on the beach alone, close to Worthing pier, looking out to sea. It was about 11pm and a clear but breezy night, the winter chill had just begun to appear. There was not much cloud cover and the stars were out. Not many people stay out late in Worthing, especially during the winter months, so there was no-one else down the beach.Aerial photo showing approximate position of witness:Chris was watching the waves when he suddenly spotted what he initially thought was an aeroplane. However he quickly realised it was not. He saw what looked like a large black triangular object with rounded edges and a constant bright light at each corner - one red, one green and one blue. He could clearly see that the object was solid and blocking out the stars in the night sky. The object appeared to be quite large in size, certainly bigger than a passenger jet. It was quite high up in the sky, Chris estimates about 30000 feet. The object was to the South directly out to sea, and appeared to be within a few miles of his position.Witness drawing of the object:The object was completely stationary which looked extremely strange to Chris. He watched it for 5-10 minutes and then suddenly it began slowly moving. He believes it was ascending but also moving towards his position, it was certainly moving up in the sky from his viewpoint. He watched it do this for a number of minutes and then suddenly without warning all the lights went out and the object completely vanished!Chris could not explain what he had seen at all. He personally believed it to be an extraterrestrial craft of some type, and this opinion has not changed over the years. Ever since the sighting he has had a recurring dream of seeing it, which tends to suggest that the sighting made an impression on him.Sighting AnalysisThis is a very interesting sighting for a number of reasons. The appearance, apparent size of the object, and the fact that it could remain stationary for a length of time, suggests it clearly wasn't a normal aircraft. There are no military bases anywhere in the vicinity so it is unlikely to have been a military aircraft, known or secret. If the object was some sort of balloon or inflatable, surely it would have drifted in the breeze, yet it remained still for up to ten minutes. Also how did the object vanish without trace? Chris says he was sure that it disappeared suddenly and not just moved out of his sight range. The object is far to unusual to have been caused by natural phenomena such as earth lights, and it was out to sea so this particular explanation is not valid for this reason alone.There have been many UFO sightings reporting black triangular shaped craft with a light at each corner before. Could this be a genuine sighting of one of these craft? Chris is completely trustworthy and I have no doubt he saw what he says he did.Chris has not had any other sightings of UFOs, however he believes he has a sixth sense and has seen ghostly apparitions on a number of occasions. I do not believe that this sighting has anything to do with these other experiences he has had, but depending on how you view ghosts you may think otherwise.4th October 2009 Related DreamOn Sunday 4th October 2009, Chris had a very unusual and vivid dream that was directly linked to his 2003 UFO sighting. The dream began with him looking down at a planet very much like the Earth, with seas and land masses. All of a sudden he started descending through the atmosphere at a very fast speed. He could not see himself, or feel the wind rushing against him, it was just a point of view. As he got closer to one of the land masses, he at first assumed it was America but then realised the shape was wrong. He got closer and closer to the ground, and could then make out a huge triangular shaped indentation in the ground. He reached ground level and then stopped on the spot. He was now looking at this giant indentation from one of it's edges. His viewpoint panned round and he could make out a crowd of strange creatures all around. They looked like a cross between a winged insect and a motorbike, but were completely organic, like the wheels were part of themselves. Their torso's and heads looked very like that of a wasp and they had long wings folded along their backs. The creatures were milling around and chittering to each other. Chris got the feeling that they were saying to him "We're here" but he could not directly understand them. The viewpoint turned back to the indentation and he could now see a giant black-coloured craft, identical to the one he had seen back in 2003, although much bigger in size. From the side it looked almost saucer shaped but he knew that from above it was a rounded triangular shape.He then began moving around the side of the craft, and could make out a mountain-side with what looked like a carved tunnel entrance. He began moving towards this entrance, the creatures rolling along either side of him. He entered the hole in the mountain-side and found it was a huge underground tunnel system. The walls looked very organic rather than like those of a natural cave. He moved down the main tunnel and could see various rooms coming off it. One of these compartments he went down into. In it he saw a row of the insectoid creatures. They were standing very still and appeared to be listening to something or someone, although he himself heard nothing. Moving back out of the compartment his viewpoint continued around the underground tunnels, almost as if he was been given a tour around it.The dream was abruptly ended by his alarm clock going off. When he awoke Chris remembered the dream in very precice detail, more so than he would usually do. Soon afterwards he sketched out the various drawings shown here. He wonders if there is some meaning behind it. Could it be linked in some way to his UFO sighting years ago? Or did he just come up with the dream because he had been questioned about his sighting relatively recently? The creatures he saw are very interesting. Chris has a phobia of insects and also is a biker so could this have been the reason behind their appearance? Either way, he did not get any feeling of fear from them, instead he felt that they were friendly and was not scared of them at all. If this was more than just a dream, were the creatures in it not showing their true appearance? Many contactees have reported seeing beings in the form of animals, often insects. Chris does not believe that he has been abducted and has experienced no other unusual things regarding either this dream or his sighting. However there is still the possibility so we should not entirely dismiss it.
