APRIL 03, 2013 - UNITED STATES - About 20 people - a few with close encounters of their own to share - came to the William Allen White Library, on the Emporia State University campus, Friday evening to learn about investigating UFO sightings.
"We are not alone, and we never have been," said Steve Winans, the Kansas director and field investigator of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), during Friday's presentation. "That's what I hope people realize, that there is something really big going on out there.... Someone is intervening in our affairs either for good or for bad, depends on your opinion, and that our officials know it and don't want to tell the people for a variety of reasons."
People can apply for annual membership, which costs between 30 and 55 a year, to MUFON at www.mufon.com, and they can pay another 55 to be a field investigator.
Winans said each field investigator applicant receives a kit and must pass a test with at least a score of 80 percent.
Tools for investigation include a camera, a compass, Google Sky or Google Earth, a laser pointer or a rangefinder, black light, metering equipment, sampling swabs and bags, and good common sense, he said.
According to MUFON documents, there were 68 sightings in 2012 and 14 sightings, so far, in 2013 - which include two identified flying objects, two insufficient-data reports, six unknown and four still under investigation.
At about 8:45 p.m. Aug. 21, 2009, witnesses spotted a UFO in Shawnee, Winans said. It appeared to be six white, circular lights aligned in the shape of a triangle, and it was the size of a small house. The UFO moved silently above a local pond at tree level and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
"That was one of my first cases," he said. "It was a very hot case."
Morgan Ottesen, an ESU freshman from Shawnee, was one of the witnesses, and she attended Friday's presentation.
"My mom's gas gauge and the RPMs and the speedometer (in her mom's van) started going crazy even though we were at a complete stop," Ottesen said. "And the lights started flashing, and she was having all kinds of electrical problems."
The van just stalled, she said.
"Eventually we got started again, and we got to the top of the hill and circled around, and we were coming back down," Ottesen said. "As soon as we passed that place again, it did the same thing. It stalled out, and then we got it to work and then took it to one of our neighbors who was a mechanic, and he couldn't find anything wrong with the (van)."
Appliances at her home also had electrical problems, the stove started a small fire, and her cat became agitated, Ottesen said.
"My cat loves me like I am its mother, and it was so standoffish and ran away," she said. "I was trying to be comforting, and it did not want to be in the same room as me."
Kenzie Templeton, a senior English major who attended the presentation, said she saw a UFO near her hometown of New Strawn, which is next to Wolf Creek Generating Station.
"It is kind of notorious for strange sightings," Templeton said. "(It was) a very, very bright light in the sky that was very close me, and then it just vanished.... It was white. It was really strange, and it was not a plane."

Angel Hair is said to be often seen following UFO sightings, so has it an extra-terrestrial source?
Probably not. And, besides, the good old scientists have a simple explanation: it's all down to spiders. Okay, perhaps, but I don't always believe the scientists' conclusions.
Angel hair is usually described as being similar to gossamer, cotton wool or silk. It's all soft, white and shiny. It's difficult to analyse as it melts away and disappears into nothing. It is also known by other names. In France it is called "the Madonna's present"; in Italy it's "siliceous cotton" and the Ufologists refer to it as "angel's hair".
Angel hair, or whatever term you prefer, first came to the attention of the UFO bods in 1954 when two men, Gennaro Lucetti and Pietro Lastrucci, were on the balcony of a hotel in St.Mark's Square in Venice. They saw what they described as two shining spindles flying across the sky. These objects left behind a white trail as they sped on their way. The UFOs then changed direction and headed towards Florence.
On the same afternoon at a soccer match in Florence the players and the 10,000+ spectators watched two objects/UFOs fly over the stadium. Cobweb like threads started to rain down on the pitch as the UFOs disappeared.
Professor Danilo Cozzi of Florence University was able to examine the threads and gave his conclusions:
"It's a fibrous material, which is highly resistant to tension and torsion. Once subjected to heat action, the material grows dark and evaporates, leaving transparent sediment that melts away. The sediment was found to contain boron, silicon, and magnesium. Hypothetically speaking, the substance may be some kind of boron-silicon glass."
But that doesn't really tell us what it is and there are many other suggestions:
American ufologist Charles Maney put is down to, "The UFO excess energy which materialized, the threads return to their dimension or some other space-time continuum while fading away."
A British unnamed ufologist reckons it's a sort of ectoplasm similar to than emanated at a spiritualists seance.

Astrophysicists and scientists over at Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) in California are planning to send out a 'come find us' transmission into space in a hope that alien races will pick up the message and come looking for us.
Nothing has been inked in paper about this possible plan, but SETI will be discussing the new initiative at the annual meeting of the American Association of Advancing Science next week. The need for such a transmission arises from the possibility that all alien races are just listening for radio transmissions and none of them is actually sending out anything.
"There could be many civilizations out there but if they are all listening and no one is broadcasting then nothing will happen," astrophysicist and SETI's chief executive, David Black, told the Sunday Times."One question is...if we go ahead, what message should we send? Should it be the work of a few scientists or should we involve the whole world, perhaps through the internet?" Black added."For half a century SETI has been searching for something that we ourselves do not produce: Deliberate transmissions towards distant worlds," director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute, Douglas Vakoch, said.
If the project does get a green signal, the messages will be sent to planets within a radius of up to 20-light years from Earth.One of the major questions that needs to be answered is how much information will be sent out. Scientists have been considering sending the entire Wikipedia to help aliens understand human life. This will be one of the talking points in the upcoming discussion.As with any new proposal, scientists have grouped themselves in two camps - those that are in favour of such a trasmission and those who are not.

I was on my back porch with my boyfriend smoking a cigarette. I was looking over my glasses and saw a light that looked too bright to be a star. I looked up and it was a bright yellowish-white orb that moved for less than a minute and vanished. About a minute or so after the first vanished the second appeared, and after I tried to point it out to my boyfriend it disappeared. When I stopped paying attention to it, it reappeared and once again vanished. I continued to look in the general direction and it blinked about 3 or 4 times before it went out completely. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, it looked like a star only brighter and moving. I tried to catch it on my phone but my phone died before I got the chance to. I kept my eye on both objects while visible until they just dimmed out until they seemed to vanish.

When I was in Vegas, just before we met at my bookstore in '91, mybusiness partner told me something that her father, Capt. Cole, had told her a year or so before. Given his position, he was probably aware of a lot more, but kept most of it to himself. He had been a WWII fighter pilot, flying first for the English before the US got into the war. She said that he flew both Spitfires (the English standard "hot-rod" plane of the day) as well as American P-51 Mustangs for the R.A.F. [side bar here: I mentioned that to somebody one time on a UFO discussion board and was challenged in my veracity - if one thing I say is wrong, then everything else is, supposedly. The challenger's claim was that ONLY Spitfires were flown by the R.A.F., so what I said on the board was "wrong". I conceded that perhaps I'd misunderstood what my partner's father had told her, but that didn't make what her father said any less true. This guy was obviously a skeptic trying to paint me as a 'disinformation' agent, as his tone on the discussion toward anybody with claims of UFO sightings was pretty hostile. I later learned, while doing research on American pilots who flew for the R.A.F., that during the course of the war, there were indeed a few Mustangs which were "on loan" to the English R.A.F. and both the planes and American pilots were under British command. Just a little bit of info, in case anybody ever brings it up.]After the war, he kept in touch with his buddies who remained in the ArmyAir Corps, as it was called back then. Apparently they kept him abreast ofthe more interesting things going on in the USAF - including the activities at Area 51 and S-4. After what happened with George Knapp and Bob Lazar on(KLAS TV?), the night-time visits by a curious public became so intrusive that it was decided to relocate the more "exotic" craft. So not long afterLazar's televised revelations, everything "they" didn't want the public to see was moved to New Mexico. Makes sense, since it's a bit more remote out there in the original testing area for nukes. The White Sands missile range is not open to the public at all - obviously for "safety" reasons - so people aren't as likely to go hiking around out there. There's probably a lot more restricted airspace out there that they can take advantage of, as well, since in Nevada they would have been sharing airspace with other, more"normal" aircraft testing. It's my guess that while there may be some testing of back-engineered craft and advanced fighter technology at A51, what people are seeing there isn't anything that came from another world. New Mexico is the place to go see that - if you can get close enough..
UFO SIGHTING IN LAKE WORTH, FLORIDA ON MAY 17TH 2013 - ABOUT 30 LIGHTS FLEW OVER HEAD FROM NORTH TO SOUTH, THEY WERE GLOWING ORANGE AND MADE NO NOISE.
I work for a locksmith so I was on call. I left my fathers house at 12:15am, to take the call, as I went out the front door I looked up and saw lights flying in formation. I screamed for my dad to come outside and take a look. He came outside and also saw them. There were about 30 lights flying in formation from north to south about 10,000 feet in altitude. They made absolutely no noise and flew from north to south. The incident was about 5 mins in length as they weren't going very fast. The final 6 of the group flew in a triangle formation. I snapped a picture with my phone and my father called the cops to report it. My father and I were in awe, and I was reluctant to report the incident. However my father insisted.

I stock been debating whether or not to report this sighting. It happened on Friday, September 16th, 2011. (This is from my pertain to in Campbell, CA) I was sitting on my bed thought TV at 2300 hrs having the status of I heard helicopters flying over. I opinion to ignore them what I live decent under the Moffet Protect air path, but determined to get up and healthy out the cosmos what it was beautiful loud. It sounded delicate two or three choppers flying over. In the same way as I looked out the blinds, I saw a three momentary pasty lights head-on spaced to the side flying overhead plus a plane and two choppers chasing it. They all headed from San Jose towards the Santa Cruz mountains (N to SE). I deliberation that was beautiful astounding, but it happened so effectively (they were all mighty very effectively) that I couldn't get it on video or any pictures. Seeing that they flew over effectively, I modestly went support to the bed to survive thought TV.
